Community Resources that Enhance the Wellness Program By: Shannon Bentley, RN-BC and Brenda Brooks, RN

 Participants will be able to name three local community resources that will enhance the Health and Wellness Center services to students  Participants will be able to identify three cost saving strategies  Participants will be able to describe two ways cost saving strategies will benefit quality of basic services to students

 Contact local Health Departments: STD Clinics, WIC Program, Well Baby, educational and medical assistance, TB Clinics  Connect with area hospitals: Use of “indigent program”, sliding fee scale, give discounts, educational programs  Research Community Action Programs: Medication assistance, free services  Social Services Programs: Medicaid, other services  Local Mental Health Agency: Victim services that are provided through grants, educational brochures, trainings, provision of speakers for groups, assemblies, pamphlets

 Use retail or grocery store discount prescription plans when possible  MOU with local pharmacies  Local labs for discounts  Local community colleges and universities

 Use Vaccine for Children's Program (VFC)— information is available at /default.htm /default.htm

 Assistive technology  Educational assemblies  MOU to meet students needs  Case management services (refer to Program Instruction Notice No.99-03)

 All communities have resources  Develop community connections  Use of HHS, Moore Medical, and other large suppliers  It’s important to stay within your budget

 Partner with local community organizations to promote healthy lifestyles (YWCA or YMCA, American Lung or Cancer Society, Red Cross or American Heart)  Promote health and community connections through volunteering  Participate in local health fairs (offer center as a place to hold a health fair)  Be an active board member for community organizations (college boards, community mental health centers, hospitals local chapters of Red Cross or American Heart)

 Contact local food growers associations for donations or reduced fees  Contact local farmer's markets or other large local fruit and vegetable distributers  Contact local hospitals  Contact health departments  Connect with local universities

 Personal trainers or fitness facilities  Involvement of local celebrity athletes  Utilize retired health personnel  Involve local organizations  Work with center Food Services  Wholesale food providers
