Forestry

What is Sustainable Forestry Sustainable means to maintain, continue and keep Forestry is about caring for and managing forests to provide the natural resources such as wood that we need now and in the future. It means sustaining other things we value from the forest like wildlife and beautiful landscapes.

Sustainable Forestry It is concerned with all parts of the forest – trees, smaller plants, soils, wildlife, and water.

For the resources To provide the world with oxygen and help absorb the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere To make a living To provide a place to live Need to keep the ecosystem alive for future generations

Tree Treasure Chest Products from live trees Products from solid wood Products from bark and cork Products from wood chips Products from pulping of wood.

There are different types of forest all over the world

Let us look at 5 main types Use your sheet to fill in the details of how each type of forest has adapted to its special climate…………

Broadleaf forest Tropical rainforest Temperate rainforest Coniferous forest Mangrove wetlands Click on the pictures to see if you can recognise the forest type.

Deforestation You may have heard about deforestation of the Rainforest. Trees cut down to make room for cattle, houses, crops, dug up for minerals beneath or flooded to make H.E.P.

Sustainable Management The exploitation of the Amazon’s natural resources can help Brazil boost its GDP and improve the quality of life of its population. Activities like logging and mining need to continue but in a controlled way. So sustainable forest management is required. This means meeting the needs of the present without harming the environment, and so allowing future generations opportunity to meet their needs.

Look for products that display the labels of logos that say they come from a sustainable source Reduce the amount of paper you use Recycle paper cardboard and wood. Sustainable forestry – what can you do
