Amazon Forest Economic contribution

Group Members Sayek Habib- 13304044 Rakshanda Tabassum- 13304057 Anushay Sunehra- 15104016 Mehreen Ahmed- 11201010

Introduction  Largest rainforest on earth  Mosaic ecosystem  Vegetation type- rainforest, seasonal forest, deciduous forest, flooded forest  “lungs of the planet”  Source of fresh water  40000 plants, 3000 fishes, 1294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, 378 reptiles

Location  “Brazil” is called the home of amazon  13%in Peru  Other seven south American countries claim a portion of Amazon  Drained by the amazon river  River is made up over 1100 tributaries

Size of Amazon  Consists of 1.4 billion acres  54% of all tropical forest on earth  9 th largest country in the world  One of the seven wonders of nature based on size and diversity

Economic contribution of Amazon  Natural rubber industry  Mining  Cattle raising  Agricultural crops- Soy beans  Most profitable- Wood cutting  Earth cooler  Balance climate- Rainfall and fresh water production  25% medicines produced from plants  Provides 6.5 million jobs to people as most of the people’s income comes from working in different forest sectors of the amazon

Economic contribution of Amazon  Goods produced in the amazon forest are exported to all South American countries and the Brazilian domestic demand  High demand for Soy beans- animal feeds- sold at high price  Illegal activities- drug dealing, biological trade and wood cutting  Serves as a path to drug dealers ( Europe & United states )  Tourism  Forest plantation sector has competitive advantages for growth, considering climate, infrastructure and technological expertise

Effects of deforestation  12-15 million hectares of forest are lost each year  Slash and burn method used to clear land  Clearance of forests emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere  Emission of co2 leads to the world climate change  11% of global green house gas emissions caused by humans  50% of the tropical protected areas maybe empty forest  It results in the extinction of animal species  The largest iron are mine, pollutes the surroundings rivers causing fish deformities

Purpose of deforestation  Land is used for say plantations, cattle ranching, logging, building dams and mining  The ore mined contains 65.4% iron

Why the deforestation must stop  Water cycling ( rainfall )  Carbon sequestering ( climate )  Biodiversity ( plants, wildlife )

Solution of deforestation  Stop illegal logging  Funding forest conversation  Pressuring corporation and markets  Changing the politics
