Due to 6-8 week lead time, diplomas would be ordered from the other place based on applications for degree, requiring a large number of diplomas to be trashed each semester. Approximately 10% were defective or had spelling errors and had to be re- ordered (with 6-8 week lead time). Because orders were placed before the end of the term, honors had to be added after the diplomas came in, originally by rub-on and then with a printer. Any re-order also took 6-8 weeks to arrive. Cost per diploma was outrageously expensive and quality and customer service were poor.

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2015 Original Plan Originally, we planned to start with only printing undergrad diplomas ourselves to solve the honors problem (30% of Tulane full-time undergrads earn honors). After talking to several vendors, we decided on Scrip-Safe based on our pre- existing relationship and my experience implementing Diplomas on Demand at two other institutions previously. Decision was made in January, 2013 to jump in head first and print all diplomas for May, 2013 ourselves.

February 2013 – Paper type, weight, and foil colors chosen. March 2013 – Printers purchased from Dell and Epson. April 2013 – Training for all staff via internet on Diplomas on Demand. PRODUCTION BEGINS FOR MAY COMMENCEMENT!

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2015 Human Investment Two staff members involved in production - Both proof read a spreadsheet printout of all diploma names before upload. - 1 proofs each diploma after printing for smudges, special characters, etc. Printing Timeline - Grad Diplomas printed by applications due to time constraints. - About 3 weeks of printing 8 hours/day to print all Grad diplomas. - Not as much waste with Grad, so we feel ok doing this. - Undergrad are printed daily the week before Commencement and the week after as degrees are certified (with honors printing on the diplomas!)
