ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute OBJECTIVES You will understand: 1. More drama techniques that can be used to teach speaking. You will be able to: 1. Use drama techniques for teaching speaking at all levels.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute USING PLAY, TV OR FILM SCRIPTS Classes can be introduced to a more formal approach to drama through the use of play, TV show or film scripts. These can be used to create short, improvised performances or longer, more rehearsed performances. Criteria for selecting a suitable script include:  relevance to student interests  suitability for language level  suitability for age level  a variety of interesting roles.  enough roles (of a similar size) for everyone in the class/across groups Search the Internet to find suitable scripts that meet students’ interests. Before the use of the script, prepare students with suitable engagement, study focus and/or study practice activities that will familiarize them with the language structures, vocabulary and situations they will encounter in the script.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute INSTANT PLAY Materials: Four or five different scripts for short plays of lines each or a short segment of a film or TV script. (Search the Internet for appropriate scripts for students’ abilities and interests.) ESATimeProcedure SP30-40 mins Divide students into groups of five or six. Students are given the script for a short play or a segment of a film script. One person in each group is designated as the director. Students read the script and assign roles. They then act it out three or four times while reading from the script. They are acting ONLY for their director, and following the director’s instructions. They do NOT need to memorize the script. They can use whatever props are available in the room. If you want, you can pair up groups and have them perform for each other. If you would like a higher level of performance accuracy, have the groups rehearse the scripts for a longer period of time.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute MIMING PLAY Materials: Four or five different scripts for short plays of lines each, or a short segment of a film or TV script. (Search the Internet for appropriate scripts for students’ abilities and interests.) ESATimeProcedure SP30-40 mins Divide students into groups of five or six. Students are given the script for a short play or a segment of a film script. One person in each group is designated as the director. Students read the play and assign roles. They then mime the events in the play. They can NOT talk as they are acting out the script. They must convey the meaning of the play only through actions. They are acting ONLY for their director, and following the director’s instructions. They do NOT need to memorize the script. They can use whatever props are available in the room. If you want, you can pair up groups and have them perform for each other.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute SERIAL PLAY OR FILM Materials: A lengthy play, TV, or film script divided up into line segments. (Search the Internet for appropriate scripts for students’ abilities and interests.) ESATimeProcedure SP20-40 mins Divide students into groups of five or six. Give each group a section of the script for a play or film. All of the sections should come from the SAME script. Indicate to each group that they have a section of a complete script. Their job is to create their section. One person in each group is designated as the director. Students read the script and assign roles. They then act it out three or four times while reading from the script. They are acting ONLY for their director, and following the director’s instructions. They do NOT need to memorize the script. They can use whatever props are available in the room. Bring the class back together. Have each group perform for the whole class in the right order so that everyone can see the whole story.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute HAVE STUDENTS CREATE THEIR OWN PLAY There are a number of different types of plays or performances that students can create. During this process, the teacher can emphasize the creative process, the quality of the end performance, or both. Some short-term (one or two lesson) projects include:  ONLY PROPS  CURRENT EVENTS SHOW  FINGER PUPPET SHOWS

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute Other options are to have students work as a class to produce a full short play or an adaptation of a longer play. The creation of the play can be a long-term project, in which students write the script, create the props, stage the play and perform it for friends, colleagues or other students. With more advanced classes/older students, consider taping/ recording, or creating Podcasts from student performances. These recordings can then be used for the correction of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. As a further alternative, listening activities can be designed based on the recordings.
