Leader in Me  Southeast received a grant to be a Leader in Me school. The Leader in Me is a program based on the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. We will be working on the habits in school this year.

Class Dojo  We will use the Seven Habits and a program called Class Dojo to encourage positive behaviors. Students earn points for following the Habits.  At the end of the quarter, we have reward parties based on points given.

Communication Arts We will continue to implement a Reader’s Workshop in our classroom this year. Our Units of Study are:  Agency and Independence  Information and Narrative Fiction  Reading to Learn: Connect to Social Studies  Historical Fiction Book Clubs  Nonfiction Research Projects  Fantasy Book Clubs  Social Issues Book Club  Author Studies

Writing We will also continue the Writer’s Workshop this year. The units of study for this are:  Narrative Craft  Lens of History  Research-Based Argumentative Essay  Shaping Texts

Math This is the second year that we will use the Envision math resource. Within that resource, we will teach the following standards:  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them  Reason abstractly and quantitatively  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others  Model with mathematics  Use appropriate tools strategically  Attend to precision  Look for and make use of structure  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Social Studies We study the following topics of US History:  Regions & Maps  Economics  Explorers  Colonial America  American Revolution  The New Nation  Westward Expansion  Civil War

Science We rotate teachers for science, and focus on the following units of study:  Living Things  Force and Motion  Weather and Water Cycle  Solar System  Energy  Scientific Inquiry  Technology  Human Body

Grading System  Progress is measured over course of school year  Marking system  Performance levels 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0  Mid-point measures (e.g., 1.5, 2.5, etc.)  Personal Development and work habits are separate

Technology Assessments  S.T.A.R. Reading and S.T.A.R. Math: A computer generated reading and math assessment which determines your child’s reading and math level.  Acuity : A computer based quiz taken over Communication Arts, Math and Science. This assessment is administered three times a year to help prepare your child for MAP testing in the spring.  MAP Testing : We will take the MAP test again this year. It will be a computer based test this year.

Homemade Treats “Beginning with the school year, to protect the health and safety of our students may bring pre- packaged treats to share with classmates in recognition of birthdays and other celebrations. Homemade treats will NOT be distributed to students. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-package treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased and delivered to your child’s classroom.” –Elementary Parent Handbook

Southeast Bazaar  We are hoping to have our Bazaar on October 3. It requires several volunteers, and will take place in the afternoon.  The Bazaar is patterned after the International Bazaar that we used to go to in Blue Springs  Students learn the economic concepts of scarcity, opportunity cost, and supply and demand.

Class Parties  Parties will be 45 minutes  Each party will a have designated food item provided by PTA  Fall: popcorn  Winter: pizza  Valentines: ice cream If you are willing to volunteer during any of our parties please sign up at Back to School Night!
