Unit objectives We are going to learn how to undertake “market research” to help plan for a new product. We are going to use our ICT knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare for the launch of the new product and to present our proposals.

The ‘Small Sweets’ Project We have been asked to produce an outline plan for a new Snack of ‘GO-Snax’ for the Kiddystuff Company. What do we mean by ‘snacks’? In pairs can we think of FIVE types of snacks?

Market Research We need to consider what children like about the snacks they buy now so we can predict what will sell well.

Possible Questions What could we ask children about regarding the snacks they buy? In pairs can you list 5 things you could ask about? Teacher – click for some suggestions. Taste / flavour Price Healthy ? Packaging Fashionable Easy to share Long lasting Collectables (cards etc) Size of snacks

Example Questionnaires The first is to collect information about the types of weather forecasts people prefer. example questionnaire for review.doc The second is designed to collect information about the equipment children have in their bedrooms. Data Collection for teenagers bedrooms example.doc

Question types To get the most from your questionnaire you will need to be accurate with your questioning. Look at the two questions below. How often do you eat healthy snacks? Very Often Often Sometimes Rarely Never At least once a day 2-6 Times a Week About Once a Week About Once a Month Never Which is the best question and why?

Designing your own survey 1.Decide on at least 5 different things you want to ask about. 2.Create a form to collect your data.  You can use either style of form.  Use insert >> symbol to obtain tick boxes (  ) when using Word.  Use ‘Table Template’ if you wish to use the second style.‘Table Template’

Reviewing questionnaires In groups read each others work.  Is it easy to understand?  Easy to complete?  Are the questions relevant? Save your questionnaire. Print it if it is finished. Collect information from 15 children.

Next lesson We will complete our questionnaires. We will also undertake a practical survey – a taste test!
