Speech Recognition

My computer doesn’t understand me……….. Software is now mainstream Many people use it within office/home setting for inputting text. For people who have difficulties with a keyboard possibly hands free or for people who have difficulty with spelling.

 still need to ‘think before you speak’. Um and Errors don’t make for good recognition!  Dictating phrases into the computer. Requires reasonably clear speech. Speech Recognition Software  Speech Recognition is better at putting correct context text within a sentence e.g. OFF and OF, so may be better for someone who has literacy difficulties

Speech Recognition  Spotting mistakes and correcting them is important as consequent accuracy improves.  Text to Speech system can help with spotting mistakes. Recorded Speech can tell what actually dictated.  Does the correction box offer me word prediction as I spell the word I am correcting? Correcting

Speech Recognition A high specification of computer is required. Noise & confidentiality can be an issue Remember computers are not infallible and neither is Speech Recognition. However, accuracy of up to 99% can be achieved. If correction is a problem for some users, extra help and support may be required building up speech file. What applications do I want to use on the computer? Word, , Internet – Be aware that it may not work in some non Windows based programs & the version of the Operating System running may be important. Pros and Cons

 Word is either right or wrong, not misspell Speech Recognition  Enables the user to use the computer ‘hands free’ as possible by controlling computer and mouse.  Able to input ideas into the computer without worrying about how to spell words.  Allows recording using external source to transcribe into computer i.e. digital dictaphone Pros and Cons

User needs to enrol by reading a passage of text aloud through the microphone. Speech Recognition Which type of microphone will work best for me? Headset, Gooseneck, wireless, combined telephone headset, mobile phone/Dictaphone etc. Do I require macros for dictation and commands ie record keystrokes for speed? Once this had been done and the speech model has been set up, you’re ready to start!

Speech Recognition Software Most smart phones have speech recognition built in Speech recognition built into Windows Vista and 7/8 iListen built into Mac Operating System Free downloadable VoxForge to work with Windows, Mac and Linux Operating systemshttp:// Dragon Naturally Speaking V.12/MacSpeak Voice recognition built into Grid 2 – useful for those with unclear speech, as compare what is said to choices on screen rather than full dictionary.
