Writing Style Level 1 “Using Action Verbs”

Verbs  Verbs come in different forms. –Action Verbs show things that are happening in a sentence. (Jump, Throw, Hit, Cause) A verb shows the action of the sentence.

Verbs Cont.  Verbs can also be state of being verbs or linking verbs. –The most common form of this type of verb is the infinitive “to be”. (Am, is, are, will, was, were, being, and been are all forms of this one verb.)

Writing Style Level #1 Verbs are supposed to show actions so: “Use action verbs rather than any of the forms of the verb “to be.”

Level 1 Practice  Torches were on the wall.  Cows were in the pasture.  The smoke that was in the air made me cough.  My friend will arrive at ten in the morning.  Torches lit the wall.  Cows grazed in the pasture.  The smoke choked me.  My friend arrives at ten tomorrow. Hint: Decide what the point of the sentence is and make it do something.

Assignment Write a fully developed descriptive paragraph which describes in detail the picture from the beginning of Thursday’s class. Paint a picture with your words; I should be able to see this picture when you are finished. Assignment Rules: All forms of the word “to be” are banned.
