 Mental and emotional disorders are illnesses that affect a person’s thoughts, feelings and behavior.  One of the biggest problems for teens that experience these types of problems comes from the inability to ask for help. Is it easy for you to ask for help? Why or why not?

 Physical factors – drugs, diseases, and injuries to the brain.  Heredity – problems with chemical levels in the brain.  Repeated emotional stressors – lifelong problems.  Sometimes people are embarrassed to admit that they have a problem, and do not seek help.

 Anxiety disorders – extreme fears of real or imaginary situations that get in the way of normal activities. 1. Panic disorder – intense feelings of fear for no apparent reason. 2. Phobias – an exaggerated or unrealistic fear of something specific. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD- have unwanted thoughts that might not make sense. They feel that they have to do something like wash hands often. 4. Post traumatic stress disorder – PTSD – in reaction to a traumatic event, people have bad memories related to the event for a long time.

Mood disorder – a mental or emotional problem in which a person undergoes mood swings that seem extreme, inappropriate, or last a long time. 1. Depression – a person feels a strong sense of hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, guilt and extreme sadness. 2. Bipolar disorder – (manic depression) – extreme mood swings for no apparent reason.

1. Loss of appetite 2. Failure to take care of personal appearance 3. Insomnia 4. Nightmares 5. Hearing voices that no one else can 6. Paranoia 7. Long periods of sadness You should seek help right away if you experience any of these symptoms..

 Suicide – The act of killing oneself on purpose.  Suicidal signs – 1. Talking about it. 2. Saying final goodbyes to friends or loved ones. 3. Giving away prized possessions. 4. Engaging in risky behavior such as drug use or reckless driving. 5. Interest in death or violence. 6. Wanting to be left alone.

 Medical treatments and counseling can help a person understand and cope with their situation. 1. Individual therapy – talking one on one. 2. Group therapy – People meet together to discuss problems and help each other. When do you get help? Mental and emotional problems do not go away on their own. If left untreated, they can become more severe. Get help as soon as you recognize there is a problem.

 Agoraphobia – afraid to leave the house.  Find valid resources that can educate you about your problem. It can be a family member, friend, health care provider, or crisis hotline, etc.  CALL 211 for a referral.

 Nakita wants to do well in school, on the volleyball team, and in her music class. It seems that when she isn’t worrying about one part of her life, she is worrying about another. Sometimes she feels so much pressure that she doesn’t even feel like eating. She also has trouble sleeping and doesn’t feel like spending time with her friends. She knows this isn’t healthy, but she’s not sure what to do. Identify her worries and make a plan for Nikita.
