Operational and Technical Requirements Rob Connatser Chief Instrument Project Engineer November 2014

Overview Environmental Electrical/EMF/Harmonics/Grounding/distances Mag field Vibration 2

Environmental Requirements Objectives and Principals Alignment of neutron optics and associated equipment is sensitive to extreme changes in temperature. During the installation phases, this equipment will be exposed to the building environment. For optimal performance and to minimize technical issues, technical equipment and electronics need to be in a well regulated environment. 3

Environmental Requirements 22 C with daily variation of +/-1 degree and seasonal of +/- 2 degrees (in D01, D03, E01, and E02). (i.e. Experiment halls and guide hall) The humidity in D01, D03, E01, and E02 shall be % RH. 4

EMC Requirements All power cables routed in the halls, in the gallery level 090 and in the culvert between E03 and D03 shall be low emitting concerning EMI. This can be done either by using shielded cables or use closed metallic cable trunks (no open “ladders“). All signal cables routed in the halls, in the gallery level 090 and in the culvert shall be installed in closed metallic cable trunks (no open “ladders“). Cables in all installations shall be grouped according to their EMC emittance and susceptibility. Each group shall be installed in a separate cable trunk. There shall be no HV power cable installed (for feeding the substations) in the halls, in the gallery level 090 and in the culvert. 5

EMC Requirements, continued To reduce impact on instrument system CF fixed installations shall not exceed domestic emission limits IEC , but shall also be tolerant to industrial levels, IEC All motors in the cranes and in the rolling doors shall be EM-shielded An exclusion zone of 10m from electrical transformers to labs and instrument equipment shall be met. Power quality delivered to the instruments shall meet EN

Grounding Requirements The cable ducting in gallery level 090 and in hall E01 shall comprise the connection of a power cable and a copper bar of X x Y mm (to be defined later, minimum is the cross section of the power cable conductors) from each instrument to its appropriate power substation. The reinforcement bars in the floor of the halls composing the mesh for the functional grounding shall be connected to each other with a low ohmic impedance of maximum 10 mOhms guaranteed over a period of 40 years preferably by welding. The reinforcement of the piling under the halls shall be connected to the floor reinforcement in the same way to improve the total ground connection. Ground potential for the instruments shall be made accessible by ground bars connecting directly to the floor reinforcement. They shall be installed: – Every 5m along the whole length of the gallery level 090. This may be limited to the area where the gallery is running under hall D01 or D03. – On each column of the wall between hall E01 and E02 7

Magnetic Field The North Sector will be defined as a non-magnetic zone. In a specified (at a later date) area, a significant portion of the floor will be reinforced with non- magnetic materials. No magnetic materials should be utilized within 4m of this instrument zone. The magnetic field strength present in this area shall be limited to a few Gauss. 8

Vibration Buildings D01, D03, E01, and E02 shall meet vibrational requirement of ISO Operating Theatre according to “Generic vibration criteria for vibration- sensitive equipment” DOI: /
