The Bergen region World leading within Subsea Technology WORKSHOP ON CABLE-BASED OCEAN OBSERVATORIES Bergen 11. June 2007 Jon Oddvar Hellevang Christian Michelsen Research (CMR) Leader Forum for Technology and Environment - NCE Subsea

NCE Subsea: Introduction National initiative to strengthen regional industrial clusters with potential for growth. Initiated and supported by: NCE Subsea is facilitated by:

NCE Subsea: Partners and members

NCE Subsea: Industrial basis Existing well defined cluster related to subsea technology in Hordaland Turnover 8 billion NOK, export 3 billion NOK, About 4000 employees Increasing involvement from competence institute/organisation Main focus on installation and operation of subsea installations in addition to sensor development and environmental/resource surveillance World leading related to operation: –Statoil and Hydro operate their subsea wells from Bergen (1/3 of the world total number of subsea wells) –FMC and AKS are doing global support from this area

NCE Subsea: Main focus areas Developing an industrial cluster Education and competence –Targeted education Innovation Internationalisation –Internationalisation of sub-suppliers Technology and Environment –Standards for Subsea operations –Condition performance monitoring –Integrated Environmental Monitoring

Integrated Environmental Monitoring Integrated Environmental Monitoring is defined as one of five ”lighthouse” projects within NCE Subsea Vision: ” Integrated Environmental Monitoring - The fundament for sustainable exploitation of fish and petroleum recourses” Main objective: ”Unite the effort from research, government, petroleum and fish industry to develop and integrate an innovative surveillance methodology for marine recourses and the environment that secure safe utilization of the ocean for everyone” Organisation involved in this ”Lighthouse project”: Norsk Hydro (leder), Statoil, Institute of Marine Recearch, Aker Kværner, Marin-Innovasjon, CMR Realization of projectcs: –We like to see NCE Subsea companies as suppliers and participants where relevant –NCE Subsea could further give guidance and provide information

Integrated Environmental Monitoring (cont.) Working with a list of parameters of interest to measure Mapping related activity where we can cooperate –Regional ocean observatories (ESONET, NEPTUNE etc.)ESONETNEPTUNE –Local ocean observatories : (Ofotfjorden, ICUWA, ”Barentshavet på skjerm”, etc.)OfotfjordenICUWA –Other environmental monitoring research programs (CORAMM, HERMES, SERPENT) –Other activity: (SFI – ”The Michelsen Centre”,”Havet og Kysten”, SFF etc.)SFI – ”The Michelsen Centre”, Different concepts has been suggested: –Separate system based on acoustic communication –Possible connection to exiting subsea infrastructure is being evaluated –Cable based observatories concept similar to EMSO A workshop was arranged in Bergen the 17th of April –Way forward will partially be devised based on the results from this workshop –Both a long term and short-term plan will be outlined

Related activity: Example 1 Ormen Lange: Surveillance of pipelines. None supporting sections > 50meter are monitored Parameters that are monitored: Acceleration Salinity Ocean current Developed by Naxys

Related activity: Example 2 Ofotfjorden: Institute of Marine Research (HI). Ref. yesterdays speak by Olav R. Godø.

Related activity: Example 3 Regionale cable observatories: Concept related to monitoring of fish in the Barents Sea (IMR) ”Barentshavet på skjerm” (consept) ESONET, NEPTUNE, etc. (planned and demo)

Summary We shall get installation in the sea that give us experience We shall establish connection between relevant sensors and infrastructure on an offshore installation We shall interact with ongoing activity within the members of NCE Subsea We shall learn from experience and seek contact with both national and international institute and organisations Getting access to existing subsea infrastructure and sharing data is regarded important for success Both short term and long term proposals will be maid A range of different financing options are evaluated: –Oil companies/licences –NFR, Demo 2000, Petromaks –FP7-ESFRI (EMSO)
