Summary of MICE beamline & hall installations This is a very rough summary of the progress since mid-December Richard Apsimon & Andy Nichols MICO meeting 8th Jan 2008

Layout of MICE hall Decay solenoid Downstream beamline Linde refrigerator Upstream beamline Target

DSA (Decay Solenoid Area) Large section of North wall now removed to allow:- Removal of concrete blocks from plinth and steel shot from Synchrotron wall. Survey and set-up of D2 Installation of girder boxes and Q35s Installation of extension rail frame over D2 support Installation of Decay Solenoid, trolley and stand. Trial insertion and survey of decay solenoid.

Decay Solenoid Installation frame and trolley. Only ½ of extension frame needed.

Decay Solenoid installation – need to remove mirror plate and cheek piece from Q35

Trial insertion of Decay Solenoid. “Easy” but with some clashes and modifications needed.

DSA (Decay Solenoid Area) Roof construction underway – removable mesh panels which can support borated polythene (if needed). Also install ~25m run of 2.5m high fence. Fabricated in 3m long panels and bolted to the top of the concrete shielding and welded to the buffer tank framework.

Delay Solenoid (pre-Xmas) & Linde cryogenics Repair of MLI, alignment of cold mass and closure (Matt Hills and Liverpool). Solenoid moved to trolley, on rails. Rail system on temporary false floor. Some delay is starting cool-down. We ran out of time and the tests were abandoned at ~70K. The good news is that there were no visible (IR camera) heat leaks. Decision taken to install solenoid in DSA and complete the test after transfer line moved.

Q35 Refurbishment & Installation 5 magnets finished. Last one being prepared in Hall. Tests in R6 going well All girder box supports complete and assembled. Both baseplates and 5 out of 6 are installed (1 st upstream one can’t because of solenoid insertion). Connection & routing of cables and pipes still to be done.

MICE Local Control Room (MLCR) - sorry for old photograph All rack bases installed First 7 racks installed (including Network and PPS racks. Of the remaining 4 rack positions, we will only ask DL to supply 2 at the moment. (Target rack plus an ‘overflow’ target rack that will probably have some space available). Cable trays installed from MICE Hall, through the wall and along the floor of the MLCR. Network has been available since mid-Dec. False floor now installed, lighting very soon.

Other issues Everything is either ‘just on time’ or ‘just too late’! Target. –Delays in manufacture & delivery of support frame & target support frame. Now quoted as 17 th Dec. This is too late. Andy Nichols & Eddie McLaren are trying to solve this. –The old support frame from the synchrotron can’t be used as Paul Wright says the radiation level is too high for non radiation workers to work on. –Target vessel is in RAL inspection. Due to go to R78 for assembly Wednesday 9 January. –Flask to receive the old target is in R6 ready to go into synchrotron hall. Magnetic shield wall design and installation. Shield plates: tender submissions by 15 th Feb. South support structure: order placed 7/1/08 with Regal Eng. North support structure: drawings being checked. Tentative approval to also go to Regal Eng. Air Conditioning. –400kW load. Units selected but need to be added to drawings to know the extent of any problems False floor and plinth design –Meeting with Opus today to finalise the design. Survey. –ISIS are unable to help with upstream alignment. Colin Croxford is sinking under the work. Liverpool are trying to provide assistance next week. Upstream Quads, both Dipoles and the Decay Solenoid. Also split Dipole#1 for the new vacuum vessel.
