LEARNING OUTCOMES Participants will define Blended Learning and Investigate 6 Blended Learning Models

 Google Blended Learning you will get 5 million results.  CCS will use the following resources to build the foundation of Blended Learning implementation.  Kahn Academy--Blended Learning 101  Book: Blended Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools  Web Resources: Clayton Christensen REVIEW VETTED RESOURCES

 Blended Learning requires digital tools.  Many of the videos & resources reference 1:1.  The first reaction to this is “I do not have 1:1 so I can’t do blended learning”.  Don’t be intimidated by the scenarios filled with 1:1  It is not necessary to have a 1:1 to accomplish Blended Learning.  CCS has the digital tools now we need the devices.  CCS is operating with the same budget since  Labs and Laptop carts will work. ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

 Evaluate the availability of devices  Knowledge of digital tools  Learning Management System: Schoology/Edmodo  iCurio  Definded Stem  Aleks  Dreambox  Benchmark Universe  Kahn Academy………………..  Understand the variations of Blended Learning and availability of devices to prepare a Blended Learning unit. WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

 The curriculum drives the lesson.  The use of technology must be meaningful and connect the content.  New documents available August 19, CURRICULUM MAP

INSTRUCTIONAL MODELS Rules for Say Something  With your partner, decide who will say something first  Take turns reading the selection aloud (stop about every two or three paragraphs)  Pause to say something about what was read  When you say something, do one or more of the following:  Make a prediction  Make a comment  Make a connection  Your Partner offers a response to what was said

Khan Academy Video DEFINITION OF BLENDED LEARNING

Blended Learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace: At least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home; And the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience. DEFINITION OF BLENDED LEARNING Source: Khan Academy Video

 With your partner read each example and share your thoughts  Example 1  Example 2  Example 3 DEFINITION OF BLENDED LEARNING Source: Khan Academy Video

Is  Structurally a new approach to content delivery  Allows for small group instruction.  Allows for personalization Is Not  Transferring course content to the web  Adding more and more online components to a lesson without reducing face to face instruction  Not just a technology rich classroom BLENDED LEARNING IS & IS NOT

 Rotation Model  During a unit students rotate on a fixed schedule or at the teacher’s discretion between learning modalities, at least one of which is online learning.  Station Rotation  Lab Rotation  Flipped Classroom  Individual Rotation  Flex  ALA Cart MODELS OF BLENDED LEARNING

Jigsaw Activity  Need Earbuds Process  Divide into Groups of 6 (Expert Groups)  1s, 2s, 3s and so on move to groups of like numbers  In the expert groups, members read and watch the video Determine what ideas they will share and how they will share in your home groups  Return to the home groups and share what has been learned in the expert groups MODELS OF BLENDED LEARNING

 You can visualize blended learning in hundreds of ways as you experiment and figure out what works best.  The school and teacher can use multiple models and combine them in different ways to create a custom program.  There is no right or wrong way!!  Blended Learning is messy! And that is OK! BLENDED LEARNING “PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER”

 Frayer Model-Has your definition of Blended Learning changed?  Shoulder Pair. Report out to the group.  Exit Slip-Use a sticky note(s) to give input on this workshop. Leave on Post it Board as you exit. DEFINITION OF BLENDED LEARNING

QUALITY DIGITAL CONTENT

 Learning Management System is a platform to…  Access learning goals  Classroom expectations,  Embedded digital academic resources  Grading rubrics  Communication feature between teacher to student and student to teacher TECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR BLENDED LEARNING
