Year 2 General Information WELCOME BACK! Welcome back to school - I hope you had a lovely summer holiday! This year there are lots of enjoyable learning opportunities to look forward to. If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything, please come and let us know. Mrs. Sefton and Mrs. Pickles PE lessons are on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has a labelled PE kit in school. Reading folders need to be in school every day. Homework Homework and spellings will be sent home on Monday and should to be returned on Friday. Breakfast Club Breakfast Club is open every morning from 8:00 until 8:45. Year 2 Autumn Curriculum Information Helpful Home Activities Just ten minutes spent each day reading and talking about their book will really help your child to improve their reading. Support your child in practicing addition and subtraction facts to 10 and 20 Such as 9 + 1, 7+3, 5+5 or , You could research the topic for this half term by using the interest or the library to find information about space, planets and aliens.

Literacy This term the children will be developing their knowledge on non-chronological reports. They will have to gather information about night time animals using information books, fact sheets and the internet and then create their own report on their finding. Also the children will be developing their story writing skills by planning their own adventure story in outer space. Numeracy Developing children’s ability to understand place value and number sequences will be our main focus this term. As part of this, we will be counting forwards and backwards from any one or two digit number along with counting in twos, fives and tens. We will also be developing our mental methods so that the children can recall addition and subtraction facts to 10 and 20 quickly. Art / DT In art and design the children will learn how to make hand puppets and will design their own scary alien. The children will develop techniques in printing and use their skills to create a solar system. Science This term we will be looking closely at forces. Discussing gravity and also the different forces used to move objects, e.g., rockets. We will also learn about different light sources, especially the sun and understand why we have day and night. Social and Emotional During circle time and PSHE lessons, we will be looking at New Beginnings. As part of this we will consider how to create enjoyable and considerate relationships with others. Physical Education For PE this term the children will be developing their skills gymnastics. They will learn different ways of balancing and travelling which will help them create their own sequence. In addition to this, children will work on developing team building skills. Religious Education Beginnings will be our first topic this term. As part of this, we will consider the many beginnings each day offers and how God is present in every beginning, such as the beginning of the world in the creation story. In our Collective Worship, children will be choosing and leading their own sessions. Space what is out there? History This term the children will develop their knowledge of famous people who went into space. We will discuss their significance through understanding why we still remember them today. Geography Children will develop their mapping skills this term and create a map of space and their own imaginary planet. By learning about features of our planet, children will be able to compare living on earth to living on space.
