The earth’s crust is made up of giant pieces of rock called tectonic plates, which sometimes rub against one another. This makes the surface above shake and roll. Sometimes earthquakes are so strong that they destroy entire cities.

It is a city in the northern part of California, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. San Francisco is located in a part of the United States where earthquakes happen more often than they do in other places.
