School of Education Springboard 2011 Secondary Education (grades 6-12) certification available in following areas: Art (K-12 Certification) English Foreign Language: French, German, Spanish (K-12 Certification) Mathematics Music (K-12 Certification) Physical Education (K-12 Certification) Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Earth &Space Science Social Sciences: Geography, History, Political Science Theater
School of Education Springboard 2011 Early Childhood/Elementary CI 200 in freshman year Early Childhood - certified to teach birth to grade 3 Elementary - certified to teach Kindergarten to grade 9 Set up a file in OCECA after first semester of college work Declare the major after meeting certain requirements, including passing the Illinois Basic Skills Test Apply to the program to finish the last 2 years

School of Education Springboard 2011 Physical Education Take CI 200 in your freshman year Certified to teach Kindergarten to grade 12 Students can set up a file with PE Advisor after first semester of college work Apply to the program to finish the last 2 years

School of Education Springboard 2011 Secondary Education Degree earned in major field of study Students should contact the College of Arts and Science for advising and registration for their major field of study Students will work with an Education Advisor to complete the professional education sequence towards the end of completing their major requirements Take CI 200 in your freshman year
School of Education Springboard 2011 Basic Skills Test ~teacher education students only~ State of Illinois requires the Basic Skill Test for admission to any teacher education program in the state Sub-tests: Reading Comprehension Language Arts Mathematics Writing 125 multiple choice questions plus a writing sample to be completed in 5 hours
School of Education Springboard 2011 Basic Skills Test - New Requirements ~teacher education students only~ First time pass rate is less than 50% There is a limit of 5 attempts for this test Must pass all areas with 80% or higher Students used to take test without studying. It has become much harder!!!
School of Education Springboard 2011 Basic Skills Test - Preparation Advice ~teacher education students only~ Take the diagnostic test at: http://www.icts.nesinc.com/ Review online study guides Form a study group of peers Take the test early in your college career as it is more closely tied to work completed in high school Contact OCECA if you would like more information.
School of Education Springboard 2011 Certification ~teacher education students only~ OCECA advisors help students stay on track with certification requirements Only courses graded C or higher will count towards certification requirements (includes major, specified general education courses and professional education coursework) Completing a teacher education program at SIUE will lead to certification in the State of Illinois, which is transferrable to other states
School of Education Springboard 2011 Speech Pathology Take SPPA 201 in your sophomore year (after 42 hours) Competitive application process required to declare major Career options available for students with a Bachelor's degree include speech aide, speech assistant, or speech implementer Licensure/Certification upon completion of Master’s degree SIUE offers the Master’s program Seniors begin practicum experience in SIUE’s Speech-Language-Hearing Center
School of Education Springboard 2011 Psychology Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science available Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior and is one of the most popular undergraduate majors at SIUE and across the country. Three graduate programs of study available: Clinical-Adult Clinical Child and School Industrial/Organizational Psychology
School of Education Springboard 2011 Psychology Highlight Field Study in Psychology Students implement the Second Step program at Head Start. This program uses puppets to teach preschool-aged children skills involving: Empathy Emotion Management Problem Solving
School of Education Springboard 2011 Health Education Bachelor of Science, no teacher certification Prepares students for the testing required in order to become Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) Prepares students for careers in community health upon completion Prepares students for advanced degrees in applied health fields, such as nursing and physical therapy
School of Education Springboard 2011 Exercise and Wellness Bachelor of Science, no teacher certification Students may work in a variety of professional settings upon completion, including community recreational agencies, health-related clinics and hospitals, and corporate and sport industries Provides an excellent foundation for graduate school in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and other fields related to exercise science Major will be renamed Exercise Science
