Scientific Method Jeopardy

Scientific Method Scientific Method 2 Variables Variables Example Graphing Observati ons & Inference s Final Jeopardy!!

Scientific Method 100 What two things are included in the procedure? What two things are included in the procedure? 1. A detailed list of steps 2. A list of materials

Scientific Method 200 What three things are included in the data/results section? What three things are included in the data/results section? 1. Graphs 2. Observations 3. Data table/chart

Scientific Method 300 What is the purpose of the conclusion? What is the purpose of the conclusion? To summarize the results of their experiment To summarize the results of their experiment

Scientific Method 400 List the steps of the scientific method in order List the steps of the scientific method in order Problem statement, background research, hypothesis, procedure, data/results, conclusion Problem statement, background research, hypothesis, procedure, data/results, conclusion

Scientific Method 100 What type of sentence must the problem statement be? What type of sentence must the problem statement be? It must be in the form of a question. It must be in the form of a question.

Scientific Method 200 What is the purpose of a problem statement? What is the purpose of a problem statement? To tell what the scientist wants to explain or know about. To tell what the scientist wants to explain or know about.

Scientific Method 300 Why is background information important? Why is background information important? So the scientist can make a good hypothesis and plan their experiment. So the scientist can make a good hypothesis and plan their experiment.

Scientific Method 400 Why is it important to do your background research before making a hypothesis? Why is it important to do your background research before making a hypothesis? So you can make an educated guess So you can make an educated guess

Variables 100 Define control variable Define control variable What the scientist wants to keep constant or the same What the scientist wants to keep constant or the same

Variables 200 Define dependent variable Define dependent variable The variable that the scientist MEASURES or OBSERVES (it depends on the independent variable) The variable that the scientist MEASURES or OBSERVES (it depends on the independent variable)

Variables 300 Define independent variable Define independent variable The variable that the scientist CHANGES The variable that the scientist CHANGES

Variables 400 Why is it important to have control variables? Why is it important to have control variables? So your experiment is as accurate as possible So your experiment is as accurate as possible

Variable Example 100 What is the independent variable in the following problem statement: How does temperature affect the growth of tadpoles? What is the independent variable in the following problem statement: How does temperature affect the growth of tadpoles? temperature temperature

Variables Example200 A teacher allowed his third period class to eat snacks while taking an exam. His fourth period class was not allowed to eat snacks while taking the same exam. He compared the test averages from both classes. Prior to this, both classes averaged comparable exam scores. Name ONE control variable Name ONE control variable Same test, same environment, same teacher, etc. Same test, same environment, same teacher, etc.

Variables Example 300 A teacher allowed his third period class to eat snacks while taking an exam. His fourth period class was not allowed to eat snacks while taking the same exam. He compared the test averages from both classes. Prior to this, both classes averaged comparable exam scores. Name the independent variable Name the independent variable Snacks or no snacks Snacks or no snacks

Variables Example 400 A teacher allowed his third period class to eat snacks while taking an exam. His fourth period class was not allowed to eat snacks while taking the same exam. He compared the test averages from both classes. Prior to this, both classes averaged comparable exam scores. Name the dependent variable Name the dependent variable Students’ scores on the test Students’ scores on the test

In the graph, In the graph, What is the independent variable? What is the independent variable? Volume (mL) Graphing 100

Graphing 200 In the graph, what is the dependent variable? In the graph, what is the dependent variable? Mass (g) Mass (g)

Graphing 300 How do you know when a graph is supposed to be a line graph? How do you know when a graph is supposed to be a line graph? A graph should be a line graph if the data is continuous – meaning that it needs to go IN ORDER.

Graphing 400 When making a graph, which axis does the independent variable go on? The dependent variable? When making a graph, which axis does the independent variable go on? The dependent variable? Independent variable = on the x-axis Independent variable = on the x-axis Dependent variable = on the y-axis Dependent variable = on the y-axis

Observations & Inferences 100 What is the difference between a qualitative observation and a quantitative observation? What is the difference between a qualitative observation and a quantitative observation? Qualitative = describe, using your senses, a QUALITY (not a number) Quantitative = measurable or countable (a quantity/number)

Observations & Inferences 200 What is an inference? What is an inference? An inference is an observation + a person’s background knowledge. An inference is an observation + a person’s background knowledge.

Observations & Inferences 300 Is the following statement qualitative, quantitative, or an inference? Explain your answer. Is the following statement qualitative, quantitative, or an inference? Explain your answer. –“On Sunday night, the teacher got the most sleep.” It’s qualitative because it doesn’t have a number It’s qualitative because it doesn’t have a number

Observations & Inferences 400 Is the following statement qualitative, quantitative, or an inference? Explain your answer. Is the following statement qualitative, quantitative, or an inference? Explain your answer. –“I think the student got 8 hours of sleep because s/he had a test the next day and wanted to be rested and ready.” It’s an inference because it says “I think___________ because ______________.” It’s an inference because it says “I think___________ because ______________.”

Final Jeopardy Read the following experiment and then answer the question that follows. Mr. Krabs created a secret ingredient for a breath mint that he thinks will “cure” the bad breath people get from eating crabby patties at the Krusty Krab. He asked 100 customers with a history of bad breath to try his new breath mint. He had fifty customers (Group A) eat a breath mint after they finished eating a crabby patty. The other fifty (Group B) also received a breath mint after they finished the sandwich, however, it was just a regular breath mint and did not have the secret ingredient. Both groups were told that they were getting the breath mint that would cure their bad breath. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, thirty customers in Group A and ten customers in Group B reported having better breath than they normally had after eating crabby patties. Questions: What is the independent variable? Dependent? Controlled variables? Independent: Mr. Krab’s secret breath mint ingredient Independent: Mr. Krab’s secret breath mint ingredient Dependent: If the person’s breath improves Dependent: If the person’s breath improves Controlled: Same history of bad breath, eat the same food, same amount of time, etc. Controlled: Same history of bad breath, eat the same food, same amount of time, etc.
