Parts of an Experiment

Question / Problem All experiments must start with a question or problem. The question should be specific and test only one variable.

Hypothesis A statement(s) that suggests possible outcomes or answers to the question. Created after the problem has been researched.

Procedure A list of steps describing how the experiment will answer the question. Variables and constants should be identified. Changed variable: The thing you purposely change from test to test. Measured variable: The thing that is affected by changes made to the changed variable.

Tell the person next to you the difference between a measured and changed variable.

Procedure continued Constants: Things that are kept the same from test to test. Control Test: A test that is run the same as all of the others that leaves out the changed variable.

Results / Data / Analysis
Results are the observations and measurements made while running the experiment. Analysis: Graphing or calculating results in order to formulate a conclusion.

Conclusion A statement that answers the question and talks about any uncontrolled variables in the experiment. New questions are asked and further areas of study are identified. Uncontrolled variables: Things that occur that may have caused change that you didn’t plan on.
