The Bible the 'Scriptures' = 'something written'.

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew Written on paper called papyrus. These were rolled up into scrolls.

The New Testament was written in Greek. It was also written on papyrus Then strips of animal skin called parchment.

Bible Translations From the original Hebrew (Old Testament) and the original Greek (New Testament), the Bible has been translated into most languages For each language, there are usually a number of translations or versions available. In English, an important translation made 400 years ago is called the King James Version (KJV) In these lessons we use a more modern version called the New International Version (NIV)

Who wrote the Bible? This is called the 'Inspiration' of the Bible. The men who wrote it did not write down their own ideas; God told them what to write. This is called the 'Inspiration' of the Bible.

Who wrote the Bible? 2 Samuel 23:2 'The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.' Jeremiah 36:2 'Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now'

Who wrote the Bible? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) 'All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work'. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NASB) All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching…….”

Who wrote the Bible? God, through his Holy Spirit power, guided and directed men to write down his words.

How can we understand what God wants? By reading the Bible By praying to God for help to understand.

The Apostle Paul tells us : ‘For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.‘ Romans 15:4

Review Questions Which books tell us about the life and death of Jesus? What does 'Testament' mean? How many books are there in the Bible ? What is 'Inspiration'?  What must we do to understand God's message?

Next lesson God and Creation The Book of Genesis The formation of earth as a place for life The creation of life
