Deploying Windows 8 with System Center Configuration Manager 2012 HOWARD A. CARTER III SENIOR CONSULTANT DMVMUG User Conference 2013 – Reston, VA

Agenda Configuration Manager 2012 Configuration Manager 2012 OS Deployment Overview Components Necessary to deploy a Windows image Build and Deploy a Win8 Task Sequence (Demo) Windows 8 Deployments Windows 8 Challenges Things to consider about hardware The Microsoft Store Start Menu Management (Demo)

Configuration Manager 2012 OS DEPLOYMENT

ConfigMgr OSD vs. MDT OSD MDT = LiteTouch Deployment Some from of interaction required to start deployment Deployment options are based on the Installer’s decisions Name Domain Deployment time app installs Designed to be lightweight and easy to implement No scheduling or central monitoring capabilities ConfigMgr = Zero-Touch Deployment No interaction required to start deployment Deployment options are based on “traits” of the system Name Collection membership Database Record Designed to be robust and centrally managed with no interaction required The exception: User Driven Installs

Necessary Components Infrastructure ConfigMgr Hierarchy – Management Point & Deployment Point Active Directory ConfigMgr Client OR Boot Media Windows ADK Microsoft Deployment Toolkit – integrated with ConfigMgr OS Deployment Components Boot Image Custom Image or Windows Installer files (OEM media) User State Migration MDT Package OS Settings Package ConfigMgr Client Package

A Word on Library Management You need a secure place to store source files “Where” its located: not so important “How” its organized: extremely important  ~Content  Applications   OS Deployments  Boot Images   MDTPackages  Media  Bootable Media  StandAlone Media  OEM Operating Systems   Custom Images  <Directory for each Image  OS Settings

Deploying Windows 8

Deploying Windows 8 is Not That Much Different From Windows 7

Windows 8 Challenges The road to Windows 8 goes through Windows 7 98% of all apps that work on Win7, will work on Win8 Don’t stop your Win7 Migrations XP goes End-of-Life April 8, 2014 The “User-Centric” model Target the User NOT the system Difficult for Enterprise Admins to grasp Must learn to relinquish control of some things – i.e. Start Menu Hardware – still catching up Not from a performance perspective… From a capabilities perspective

Hardware – the new AppCompat Remember Windows Vista? Underpowered hardware Apps that wouldn’t run User Access Control Are you Sure? Are you Really Sure? Are you Absolutely Sure? Hardware is the new “AppCompat” Form Factor Size Ruggedness Firmware/Drivers Sideswipe Old peripherals Battery Life ARM Atom Intel i3 Security TPM Smart Cards 10 Point Touch May not need it today… but what about tomorrow?

The Microsoft Store First Ask – Do I really need the store? MS Store access requires a Microsoft Account (Hotmail, Outlook.com, Live) Apps are Licensed to the User – up to 5 devices Do Government Regulations allow me to put my app in the store? (HIPPA, PII, etc.) Read and understand the EULA for the MS Store

Customizing the Start Screen 1.Use Unattend.xml StartTiles settings Requires the AppID Up to 12 Apps See WSIM help file for details 2.Manually Customize then CopyProfile Stop the task sequence  LTISuspend.wsf Make changes Restart the Task Sequence Copy Profile is used during the deployment task sequence 3.Manually Customize – copy layout file to default user Copy - C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft \Windows\AppsFolderLayout.bin to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft \Windows\AppsFolderLayout.bin Three Approaches

More Tips For Start Screen Customization To change the color scheme then then use the SystemDefaultBackgroundColor setting in the unattend.xml Only Windows 8 Enterprise or domain-joined Windows 8 Pro can customize the Start Screen Links to websites will be maintained during the copy process; however icons for these links will not be retained. Non-default Windows Store Apps cannot be added to the image; doing so will cause Sysprep to fail. Side loading applications is permitted
