4 Agenda Windows AIK supported operating systems New features in Windows AIK 2.0 Improved features in Windows AIK 2.0 Depreciated tools from Windows AIK 1.1 Installing Windows AIK 2.0 Manual installation Automated installation Exploring Windows AIK 2.0 tools Using Windows AIK for basic deployment tasks Creating a custom Windows PE image with DISM Using additional tools (Gimagex and MDT 2010) Creating an unattend answer file using Windows SIM

5 Supported Operating Systems Windows AIK Version 2.0 The following operating systems can be configured and deployed using Windows AIK 2.0 Windows 7 Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2008

6 New Features in Version 2.0 Image management with the Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool (DISM) Change Windows editions during deployment Add or remove 32-bit and 64-bit device drivers Add or remove language packs Enable or disable Windows features Add and configure updates New Windows default disk partition structure Optimise Windows PE Images Deploy virtual hard disks with native boot Manage Windows Activation with the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) Manage migrations with User State Migration Toolkit 4.0

7 Improved Features in Version 2.0 New Unattend setup file entries Microsoft-Windows-Setup-ModifyPartition\TypeID Microsoft-Windows-Setup-ModifyPartition\Letter Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup\NotificationArea Microsoft-Windows-Deployment\Generalize Improved documentation Windows AIK scenarios New and improved conceptual information Documentation organised in end-to-end process flows

8 Depreciated Tools in Version 2.0 Intlcfg.exe - This release of the Windows AIK includes the Intlcfg.exe tool to enable the configuration of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 installations only. PEimg.exe - This tool is not available with this release of the Windows AIK. Pkgmgr.exe - Package Manager is included in all Windows installations, and you can continue to use existing scripts that call Package Manager. However, we recommend that you update your environment to support DISM for all Windows 7 installations. PostReflect.exe - The functionality of this tool is built into the Sysprep command. This tool is not available with this release of the Windows AIK. VSP1CLN.exe - This tool is no longer required and is not available with this release of the Windows AIK

10 Windows Deployment Services Prerequisites Active Directory Windows Deployment Services server must be either a member of an Active Directory domain or a domain controller for an Active Directory domain Active Directory domain and forest versions are irrelevant DHCP Working DHCP server with an active scope on the network DNS A working DNS server on the network Target Systems need access across the network

11 Windows Deployment Services 2008 Key Features Replaces Remote Installation Services (RIS) RIS cannot deploy Vista, Server 2008 (no support for WIM format) Available for WS2K3 Can install Win7, Vista, XP, WS2K8, WS2K3, and W2K Uses WinPE as the boot environment on target PC WinPE can be customised WinPE is deployed as a compressed WIM image with RAMDISK boot support A WinPE-based WDS Client provides image selection Native support for WIM images New Microsoft PXE Server architecture Provider plug-ins to augment core networking functionality can send a PXE request to another deployment tool, e.g., ConfigMgr

14 Review of Key Tools ToolDescription Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM) This tool is used to open Windows images, create answer files, and manage distribution shares and configuration sets. Windows Deployment ServicesThis tool is used to deploy Windows images via PXE boot from the network. Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) This tool is used to apply updates, drivers, and language packs to a Windows image. DISM is available in all installations of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) A minimal operating system environment used to deploy Windows. The Windows AIK includes several tools used to build and configure Windows PE environments. Windows Setup This tool is used to install Windows. This tool is included in the Windows product DVD and is not part of the AIK installation. Sysprep This tool is used to prepare a Windows installation for imaging and is including in the Windows operating system from Windows Vista onwards. User State Migration Tool (USMT) This tool kit is used to migrate user data from a previous Windows operating system to Windows 7 or Windows Vista

15 Summary Simple deployments can be configured with the Windows Automated Installation Kit Simple deployments can be configured with Windows Deployment Services which adds extra automation and driver delivery options By combining tools you can develop more sophisticated deployment options
