Social 10-2

Trade  If you ran a corporation, what would your three most important goals be? Rate them in order of importance. People trade anything from natural resources to clothing, to ideas and services. Trading brings people together physically, as well as connects us through our common trade goods and motivations for trade.

Why do people trade? 1. Goods not available in their own region. 2. Goods are better quality/different. 3. Goods are cheaper. 4. Goods are beneficial. 5. Make money and prosper.

Import: goods that are moved into a country from other countries. Export: goods are moved out of a country to other countries.

Transnational Corporations  A company that is based in one country while buying, selling and / or manufacturing its products in other countries. Economies of Scale:  Savings due to the advantages of a large company. Ex: Own tranportation/other companies. Efficient equipment/ people/state of the art. Power=Jobs=low wages

 FYI of the top 500 transnational corporations:  170 – USA  70 - Japan  38 – Britain and France  14 – Canada What do the above statistics suggest about global trade? What impact does this have on global North / Global south citizens?

Transportation  Transportation is essential for trade; It is used to move goods and people to markets around the world. – markets: an area or group people to which goods are sold. The speed and method of which we transport good and people serve to connect us to more and more people each day. Example: “chunnel between London & Paris”. Containerization of shipping

Communication Technology  Communication technology has revolutionizied the way information flows. The type and speed of information we can receive and exchange has led us into a truly global village. Example: buy, sell, talk, school, entertainment, research, bank etc... Can all be done via WWW- world wide web.

Question: How might the WWW affect your individual and collective identity?

Media  One way communication of ideas – in a globalized world, information can travel across the world instantly, in multiple languages, in multiple mediums – methods of media – researching masses of people. example: Television, Radio, Billboards, newspapers, websites, etc.

The driving forces of globalization have contributed to the “global” effect in the world - the globalizing world shapes your everyday life and your everyday life shapes the globalizing world. How might globalizing forces affect your identity? How might you influence globalizing forces?
