Teacher Web Sites How are teacher or school Web sites utilized?

Basic Principles Websites should be informative for both current and prospective students (Cavanaugh & Cavanaugh, 2002) Websites should be encoded for meaning rather than appearance (Pugalee & Bray, 2003) Websites should be able to be utilized by their students, parents, administration, community and teachers (Badner, 2004)

Frequently cited purposes for a classroom website related to parental communication: Provide general information for parents Communicate regularly updated information Increase parental involvement Provide teacher contact information Publish a record of major events/projects Calendars Policies & procedures Forms

Teacher websites allow users to Integrate technology into teaching/learning –Links to online educational resources with, instructions and descriptions for the online educational resources –Provide information on homework/classwork, including due dates, dates assigned, instructions on what to do, and how the work will be assessed.

Purposes related to enhancing student learning. Facilitate collaborative groups within your classroom Allow access to student grades Fulfill an expectation of administration Provide a competitive edge to your school/classroom Share personal information about yourself

Three Main Barriers Access to software. Perception that parents will not be able to access Internet. Lack of time.

The most frequently cited concerns: Student safety on the Internet Copyright compliance Having working and up-to-date technology in school Keeping links on the site relevant and working Ensuring the site works on a variety of computers and browsers
