Best Practices for Compliance in Over-size/Over-dimensional Movement “Do Not Be Satisfied with the Status Quo” Mike Poppe Precision Heavy Haul, Inc.

Philosophy/Corporate Culture Develop a good safety incentive bonus program That combines a safety program with commonsense practical incentives

Safety Incentive Bonus Program A fair & well managed safety incentive bonus program will: –Reward safety –Reduce damages –Improve driver performance –Reduce costs, i.e. insurance, maintenance, & overall operating costs –Maintain & improve CSA/ISS scores

Safety Incentive Bonus Program Could include: Driver Incentive Bonus EOBR Report Card Performance Driver of the Year Driver With the Most Pride Quarterly Team Safety Bonus

Driver Incentive Bonus Points based system – for example, driver starts w/100 points Can “add to” or “subtract from” this total Convert “end of year” total points to dollars and this amount is the driver’s bonus

Safety Incentive Bonus Program Examples of “subtracting from” points: Not following permit guidelines Not reporting equipment defects Load not properly secured per “company” guidelines

Safety Incentive Bonus Program Examples of “subtracting from” points (continued): Roadside violations Roadside (Out of Service) violations Not reporting accidents/incidents to the company Monthly CVSA Level 1 inspections not completed

Safety Incentive Bonus Program Examples of “adding to” points: Receive a “clean” law enforcement roadside inspection Unsolicited written compliments from customers and/or law enforcement jurisdictions

Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs) Benefits? Recorded driver & equipment performance Company can establish event thresholds for speed, idle time, hard braking, etc. Exceeding thresholds sends alerts to managers No HOS violations since implementation, including “form and manner” violations Highest driver scorecard receives 50 points

Driver of the Year Recognizes the driver who has demonstrated a superior work & safety ethic for the entire year Recognizes the driver that had the highest over-all score for the year

Driver With the Most Pride Recognizes driver that sets himself/herself apart from the rest Encourages keeping trucks in “beyond” excellent condition Principle measurement – “above acceptable” –Securement items organized & in good condition –Permit books in good order –Monthly unannounced vehicle safety inspections

Quarterly Team Safety Bonus Include all employees and split into two teams Each employee without an incident per quarter receives $50 Each team with no incidents per quarter –All members of the team receives an additional $100 at end of 4 th quarter Promotes Team Building Reduces workplace accidents and injuries

Safety Incentive Bonus Program “Going Above and Beyond” 1.How do you get there? 2.How do you maintain it? Questions?
