Why Do People Join Professional Societies? It’s a career investment They expect something of value in return  Value, to a professional, is something that helps them: Advance their careers Experience leadership Gain peer/professional recognition Gain access to lifelong learning

Involving All Members Involvement – Committed members renew at high rate  Use all member talents, not just TIME  Ensure the time commitment is small  Outline clear expectations  Ensure their accomplishments are acknowledged  Direct their participation toward maximum benefit  Participation does not need to be traditional to have perceived value

Contact at-risk members  1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd year members  Recently graduated students and students in their last semester  Members that have not renewed by February All at-risk members are available on FTP Involving All Members

Welcome new members using our FTP site Get them involved Myth: The Renewal form is Retention.  Reality: In most cases, members have already determined (consciously/unconsciously) if they will stay prior to receiving the renewal  Fact: The Renewal form is the last step in an effective retention campaign Involving New Members

Welcome New Members with:  Special newsletter, fax or broadcast that includes information a new member may not be aware of  New Member Welcome Kit  Send a special letter, or postcard welcoming new members  Personally invite them to events  Establish a welcome committee for every event  Follow-up with first-time attendees after the event

Coordinate meetings with ASCE leaders and industry leaders  Explain the value of membership  Encourage employers to pay dues  Encourage employers to give paid time off for participation  Inform leaders that active ASCE membership develops and refines the professionalism of their employees (transferable skills) Involving Industry Leaders

Leaders of government agencies  Invite as speakers  Invite as guests Corporate leaders working on government projects  Invite as speakers Conduct a meeting at either facility Involving Government Engineers
