2 What is PLS?   Phi Lambda Sigma is a professional society that recognizes and strives to foster leaders in the profession of pharmacy   It is complementary to Rho Chi, the academic honor society, in that members are chosen by their peers and recognized for their accomplishments

3 PLS History   Phi Lambda Sigma was first organized in March 1965 by Charles Thomas, a pharmacy student at Auburn University   PLS was established believing that leaders needed recognition for their contributions to our profession

4 The Mission of PLS To foster and recognize leaders and support leadership commitment

5 Goals of the Society   Ensure the continuing availability of student and practitioner leaders for the profession of pharmacy   Acknowledge leadership achievement and award membership to leaders recommended by the Society   Enhance the talent, skill, and effectiveness of leaders for the profession of pharmacy   Support and encourage sustained leadership commitment

6 Membership   Membership in Phi Lambda Sigma consists of four categories   Collegiate   Faculty   Alumni   Honorary   All prospective members are nominated on the basis of their demonstration of dedication, service and leadership in the advancement of pharmacy

7 Chapters   Phi Lambda Sigma chapters have been chartered at 97 schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Puerto Rico   The Beta Chi Chapter at the SCCP – MUSC campus was chartered in April 2002

8 Organizational Leadership at the National Level   The National Executive Committee consists of 6 practitioner and 2 student officers   Elected officers   President-elect (a faculty or alumni office)   Member at Large (a student office)   Speaker of the House (a student office)   Elected during the PLS House of Delegates meeting held in conjunction with the APhA Annual Meeting   The National Executive Committee also appoints 8 Regional Liaisons annually

9 Organizational Leadership at the Chapter Level   Chapter Officers   President   Vice President   Secretary   Treasurer   Historian   Faculty Advisor

10 Beta Chi Chapter Activities   Leadership seminar series (fall semester)   Etiquette dinner (fall semester)   PLS/Rho Chi CV & Interviewing Workshop (fall semester)   Annual Leadership Conference (January)   Annual initiation and awards event (February)

11 Beta Chi Chapter Activities   CLARION competition (March)   Transitioned under SIPS leadership this year   PLS Annual Meeting (March)   SCPhA Junior Board Member Program   Initiated by chapter, but now run by SCPhA   Leadership Summit (new)

12 Beta Chi Chapter Accomplishments   Two alumni member recipients of the National Alumni of the Year Award (2009 & 2011)   Chapter recognized as Chapter of the Year (2006 & 2009)   Advisor recognized as Advisor of the Year (2008)   Seven students elected to national office (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 (2), & 2010)   Faculty advisor elected to national office (2003)

13 Beta Chi Chapter Accomplishments   Seven students appointed as regional liaisons (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009)   Two faculty members and one alumni member recipient of the National Leadership Award (2004, 2008 & 2010)   One student recipient of the Founder’s Award (2008)   Chapter recipient of the Leadership Challenge Grant (2003 & 2004)   Chapter recipient of the New Chapter Incentive Grant (2003)

14 Benefits of Membership   Opportunities to network with other leaders in the profession   Working with leaders in your college and community to foster new leadership ideas and goals   Identifying the leadership needs within your college and working to enhance and develop leadership skills in students, faculty, and practitioners in your area

15 Benefits of Membership   Communicating with members around the country to share ideas and information via the national website, newsletter, Facebook, and at national pharmacy meetings   Developing camaraderie with other students and professionals who understand the challenges and rewards of leadership   Opportunities for grants and scholarships

17 ! Welcome!   The profession of pharmacy is at turning point where new leaders are needed to assume the challenges of our continuously evolving profession   By promoting leadership recognition, Phi Lambda Sigma provides an incentive for the development of future leaders for the profession

18 PLS Annual Meeting Events at the 2012 APhA Annual Meeting   House of Delegates   Hilton Napoleon Ballroom   Saturday, March 10 th, 2012 from 3:30 - 5:30 PM   Awards Reception   Hilton Napoleon Ballroom   Saturday, March 10 th, 2012 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM   Both events are open to all members and invited guests at no cost
