Have positive expectations for student success Is an extremely good classroom manager Knows how to design lessons for student mastery Effective Teachers

Review pages (Skip page 43) Things you found interesting 2 Things you learned 1 Question you still have Positive Expectations

Page has more examples of statements of positive expectations Examples: Effort produces achievement. Hard work produces great things! This will be an exciting class, and you are going to have the most memorable year you have ever had; as a result, you will do very well. All dreams come true – if we have the courage to pursue them. ~ Walt Disney Create Positivity Statement

Effective teachers MANAGE their classrooms. Ineffective teachers DISCIPLINE their classrooms. Well-Managed Classrooms

1.Students are deeply involved with their work, especially with academic, teacher-led instruction. 2.Students know what is expected of them and are generally successful. 3.There is relatively little wasted time, confusion, or disruption. 4.The climate of the classroom is work-oriented but relaxed and pleasant. Well-Managed Classrooms

Individually read pages On a sticky note! 1. I used to think… but now I know… 2. I agree with…. because….. 3. I disagree with …. because….. Classroom Management

Structure of a discipline plan 1.Rules a.General b.Specific 2.Consequences a.Negative thing that happens when breaking a rule. b.Every action results in a consequence c.Natural consequences 3.Rewards a.The best reward is the satisfaction of a job well done. b.Students earn rewards Discipline Plan

Work with your content team to write rules for your classroom. Once you have decided on your rules, create an anchor chart as a group to hang in a place of your choice in the room. What Are Your Rules

Stick Post It notes as a team to each teams rule chart. What do you like? What might you change/add? Gallery Walk

Examples of Consequences ● Sign Binder/Move Clip ● Removal from group/classroom ● Conference with student ● Parent contact ● Lunch detention ● Saturday school ● After school detention ● Office referral *Always follow campus procedures, rules, consequences and rewards Consequences

What are some appropriate rewards to use… ● Success ● Smile ● High Five ● Praise ● Calls/ /texts home ● Stickers/stamps ● Notes Rewards

Your assignment - Complete the following math problems. Turn in when complete. 2X X10 Your next Assignment

The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline, it is the lack of procedures and routines. Procedures

Why are procedures important within the classroom? Students need to have procedures so that time is spent working. Whoever does the work is the one learning. Student achievement is directly linked to how well procedures are established. Procedures need to be modeled and practice until they are routine. Procedures

In work time, read page , page may also be helpful, with page 178 directing to additional pages for help Use chart paper to pick 5 procedures that you will complete after reading this section. Write out the procedures as you wish for them to occur within your classroom. Post around the room when complete. Procedures

Students Want to Know Am I in the right room? 2. Am I supposed to sit? 3. What are the rules in this classroom? 4. What will I be doing this year? 5. How will I be graded? 6. Who is this teacher (as a person)? 7. Will the teacher treat me as a human being? How does this differ for high and low performing students? 7 Things To Think About

1.A climate of work is what you want to establish during the first week of school. 2.The first week of school should stress large-group organization and student procedures. 3.Spend your time of classroom management of student procedures rather than making your classroom look like a showcase. 4.Do not overarrange or over decorate your room for the opening of school. (You do not need a ton of posters or things from the teacher store. Your anchor charts will be your decoration.) 5.Your room should be neat and organized. Setting Up Your Room

“The most important factor governing student success is classroom management.” You can’t repeat the first day of school. Students yearn to know what they will be doing and they love consistency! The 1st Day of School

Greet the students at the door –Build relationships –Welcomes students Assign seats –Quickly allows for roll taking –Helps with memorizing student names –Separates potential student issues Assignment on the board –Shows our focus in class is to learn –Uses class time effectively –Allows teachers to do quick housekeeping items Start the Year Off Right
