What is a music video? Starter: Q. What is a music video? Write down your definition based on what you know so far. 3 LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

What is a music video? Q. What is a music video? A videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device...to promote the sale of music recordings... A short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Music Video Timeline Feedback about key moments from in music video history: LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos 5

Andrew Goodwin Andrew Goodwin wrote a book in 1990s called ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’. In it, he set out his 6 key features. We use this framework in order to analyse music videos. LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos 13

Andrew Goodwin 1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band) LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin 2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting) LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin 3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting) LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin 4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style). LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin 5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin 6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc). LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin A song about love has a woman walking around with a large red heart. A Madonna video shows her dancing athletically. A song by a screamo band includes lots of fast editing. A video is filmed in black and white, and the band walk around like they’re in a French film. In a R n B video, the male singer looks, we see a gyrating dancer, and then we see his reaction. An Emo video has lots of high school children walking around school wearing black clothes. 5 LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin? Using what you know about the 6 key features, apply them to the videos you are about to watch. Which features are exemplified by which videos? Swedish House Mafia – ‘One (Your Name)’ Baxter Dury – ‘Claire’ Adam and the Ants – ‘Stand and Deliver’ 15 LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Music video analysis We should now be able to analyse a music video by applying: the 4 technical areas (sound*/editing/mise-en- scene/camera) Goodwin’s key features *the song itself – think about music appreciation/analysis Watch the video and makes notes (as in AS) and be prepared to produce an anlaysis of the video in your groups on sugar paper. 16 LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos

Create a table like this one and show how the 6 key features and 4 technical areas link: 20 LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos AG featureTechnical areas 1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band) R’n’ B Sound – glossy, mechanical beats, dramatic singing, lyrics about love, loss, bling, aggression Mise-en-scene – cars, houses, dancing etc Editing - to beat Camera – close-ups, tracking shots

For discussion: 1.Which of the six features will you see most/least of? 2.Which is most difficult/easiest to analyse? 3.Which is most difficult/easiest to film? 4.How will this affect your music choices? LO: to identify and apply the forms and conventions of music videos 15

G324 advice on music copyright: All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non-original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work. Further guidance will be available in the support materials. For music video, permission should be sought from the artist for use of the audio track.

G324 Choosing a song You need to choose a song for your video. Choose on the basis of: Lyrics – story/impressionistic/abstract/unusual/easy Rhythm/tone – fast/loud/menacing/bouncy/fun/rhythmic Style/genre Similar videos by the band are good – you’d like to make one like that Don’t choose because: You want to show how cool you are You like the band Your friends, who want to be in it, like the song The first 10 seconds are alright The length – 3 and a half minutes might be a better bet than 4.52 but if you don’t like the reasons above you will be stuck with it

G324 Choosing a song You are marked on: holding a shot steady, where appropriate; framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate; using a variety of shot distances as appropriate; shooting material appropriate to the task set; selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting; editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer; using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriately for the task set; using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set …so there is no component that requires you to chose a song by your favourite band/singer.

Plenary Use the remaining time to research a suitable band/singer and review what you have learnt so far. 10
