Tips & Tricks for Making Your Moodle Video By: Sara Zachary Thompson & Jenny Owens

Uses for Spalding.present.me Creating a welcome video Going over the syllabus Creating lectures Providing feedback Other creative ideas??

Initial Preparation Check to make sure you have a spalding.present.me account Have a plan or basic outline of what you want to cover in your video It is necessary to provide a transcript of all videos in order to UDL compliant If you’re using PowerPoint, make the slides in advance and upload them into spalding.present.me *Note: Do not record audio files in PowerPoint, as this can cause issues. Instead audio can be recorded directly into spalding.present.me Make sure you have good internet connection

Environmental Factors Pay attention to your surroundings!! What is the probability of getting interrupted? Is the environment too noisy? What is your backdrop? Notice any clutter in the space How is the lighting? Make sure to avoid backlighting

Personal Factors Dress professionally Make eye contact with the camera Avoid reading directly from notes BE YOURSELF!!!!

Ideas for Increasing Engagement Keep lectures to 30 minutes or less Add in props or visual stimuli PowerPoints with pictures add an extra visual Do not add too much text per slide Be enthusiastic (versus a monotone voice) BE CREATIVE!

Adding Screenshots If you would like to show a screenshot of your computer screen: Get your computer to the page you would like to screenshot Hit the print screen button (PrtScr) on a PC or command-shift-3 on a mac The screenshot will create a file, which can be pasted into a PowerPoint slide

Making Your First Video You’ve signed up, logged in and are ready to make your first video! Click on the Create tab at the top of the page, and you’ll be taken to the upload page. Choose the type of video you would like to create. Click Proceed and you can then choose your file to upload. Supported files: PowerPoint, PDF (you can export from Keynote and Prezi to PDF), word document, or Google doc.

Making Your First Video When the file has uploaded, you’ll be taken to a new tab while your file converts so it works with Spalding.present.me. Once it’s converted, you’ll see a green Record button appear to the right. Click Record and the slides will be loaded into the recorder application (recording has not begun yet). The website will do some checks and ask for permission to use your webcam and microphone (click allow).

Doing a “Test Run” Say a few words just to make sure your microphone is working. You’ll see the meter on the right hand side move up and down as you talk. Look at the backdrop and your positioning in the camera to know exactly what can be seen Make sure PowerPoints are downloaded properly and that you know how to go to different slides Use the right & left arrow keys to move your slides forwards and back

Making Your First Video Click the red Record button and you’ll get a 5 second countdown recording starts. When you’ve either reached the last slide, or are ready to stop, click the Stop button and you will stop recording. If you’re on the last slide, you can also click ‘Next’ and that will stop the recording too. Click ‘End & Review’ and you will be taken to the Publish page.

Review Your Work After you stop recording, make sure to review your video to ensure that you are happy with the outcome Re-check the following: Did you say everything you meant to? How does the backdrop look? Is the sound loud enough? Is the video engaging?
