Joke of the Day Intelligent Life It was a celebratory mood with the folks at NASA… they had just made a scientific achievement of a lifetime. As they were uncorking the bottle of champagne, the lead scientist at NASA asked everyone to be quiet as a congratulatory phone call from the President was coming in on the phone. He picked up the special red phone (hot line) to the White House and with a broad smile on his face he said “Mr. President, after 12 years of hard research and billions of dollars spent, we have finally found intelligent life on Mars.” He listened intently for a second. As he did, his smile slowly disappeared and was replaced by a frown. He said, “But that’s impossible… we could never do it… yes, Mr. President we will try to accomplish the task you’ve now given us.” Then he hung up the phone. He addressed the crowd of scientists and engineers who were staring at him curiously. “I have some good news and bad news from the President. First, he is very proud of us for discovering life on Mars. The bad news is he now wants us to try to find it in Congress.”

D.O.S. #103 Thermal pollution occurs when human activities cause the temperature of lakes and rivers to rise. Why are fish most likely to be harmed by long-term thermal pollution of the water in which they live? The solubility of oxygen in the water decreases The solubility of carbon dioxide in the water increases The solubility of fertilizers, such as potassium chloride will decrease in the water The solubility of quartz crystals will increase in the water Answer: The solubility of oxygen in the water decreases Solubility of gases decreases as temperature increases (movement increases and oxygen and carbon dioxide bubble out). Bad for Oxygen, could for CO2 (which is what fish exhale) KCl is a solid when in fertilizer, so it dissolves as temperatures rise. Note KCl is also what they use for food processing, a substitute salt for NaCl and in higher concentrations - lethal injections

Joke for the Day An Engineer, a Physicist, and a Mathematician are Staying in a Hotel…. The engineer wakes up and smells smoke. He goes out into the hallway and sees a fire, so he fills a trash can from his room with water and douses the fire. He goes back to bed. Later, the physicist wakes up and smells smoke. He opens his door and sees a fire in the hallway. He walks down the hall to a fire hose and after calculating the flame velocity, distance, water pressure, trajectory, etc. extinguishes the fire with the minimum amount of water and energy needed. Later, the mathematician wakes up and smells smoke. He goes to the hall, sees the fire and then the fire hose. He thinks for a moment and then exclaims, "Ah, a solution exists!" and then goes back to bed.
