Web 2.0 Vocabulary  Web 2.0 is simply the web-based services and tools that allow us to network and share creations easier.  Podcasts are blogs. They are both a place (like a website) to share information and allow others to comment.  Podcast came from the words “broadcast” and “ipod.”  Podcasts are syndications, which means that users may subscribe and have episodes downloaded automatically to their computer. That is where you might here the acronym RSS.

Podcast, blogs and wikis helping to integrate 21 st century learning skills  All three are simply a way to share information.  Blogs can be used to share comments.  Podcasts are blogs that can be subscribed to.  Wikis are sites that allow all users to add, remove, and edit information.  HOW COULD YOU USE ONE OF THESE IN YOUR LIBRARY TO COMMUNICATE YOUR PROGRAM OR COLLABORATE WITH STAFF AND STUDENTS?  HOW COULD A PODCAST HELP COMMUNICATE/ANSWER YOUR ESSENTIAL QUESTION?

Do Now  Use a post it note to write down one topic that you could make a podcast about.  Think of communicating your program, such as a video tour of your library or how to search the OPAC  Or… book talks with students  Or… collaborative projects with teachers, such as an acrostic poem about Kentucky!  Use podcasting to answer your essential question and deliver your mission. THE IDEAS ARE ENDLESS!! Be ready to share your idea Be ready to share your idea

Podcast Power  You can see that the ideas are endless and podcasts can be a driving force to integrate 21 st century learning skills into the curriculum. (oh yea, kids love it!)  Making a podcast can be easy with the right tools.  Equipment needed:  Computer  Microphone  Podcast site  Programs to help make a podcast:  Audacity: Record narrations to upload  Windows Movie Maker: Create Movies to upload  Smart Notebook: Create a tutorial straight off your computer  Videora: Use to put videos in QuickTime for easy upload to podcast directory  JCPS can create a podcast site for you, or you can create your own (for free) at Podomatic. Remember that podcast stems from the word ipod, which means that all podcasts Are most user friendly when in an Apple format like Quick Times and iTunes.

Let’s Make a podcast!  We are going to use Audacity to record a narration that we will upload to our podcast site.  Our podcast site was created for all participants to view and practice with is  odcastpowerlibrarianssummerinstitute odcastpowerlibrarianssummerinstitute odcastpowerlibrarianssummerinstitute

 Once you open Audacity, you can just click on the red record button. Push stop to stop.  When you are done, click file, export as WAV. Save it in a location you know where it is.

 Add your audio file to your iTunes library. This puts it in the format for a podcast.  You can’t do videos this way, but I will show you a way to save videos in the right format.

 Log into your podcast site (the blog section) and click on the “+” button.

Click the icon to add file (audio or video).

Browse for your file. This is just like adding an attachment in an . This may take several minutes to upload.

Using Videora to convert video to Quick Time Using Videora to convert video to Quick Time  A video file is most user friendly for podcasts if it is in Quick Time format  I use Videora to convert my Windows Movie Maker movies.

 Choose Normal Mode  Then, select your video. The program walks you through the steps.  You have me as a resource if you have any questions! 

Podcasting can help you meet all the standards, deliver your mission, and answer your essential question! Now you know why it is called Podcast Power!
