The Maori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand. There is a Maori legend saying that they arrived in Aotearoa from their homeland "Hawaiki" about 1,000 years ago. Aoteroa or "Land of the long white cloud"

The Taiaha is a weapon. This traditional hardwood fighting staff looks like a spear. It was used in martial arts. A taiaha has a carved head, with paua shell eyes and an extended, defiant tongue made of pounamu (greenstone jade).

Haka originally performed by warriors before a battle.

Maori gods were sometimes represented by carved godsticks bound with cord. A godstick was frequently used in the ritual acts sanctifying the planting, tending and harvesting of sweet potato. The godstick on the left represents Rongo while the one on the right is thought to represent Tangaroa. 2) Tangaroa was the personification of the ocean and the ancestor or origin of all fish 1) Rongo was the personification of peaceful activities and agriculture 1 2
