1 The koru (Māori word for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the unfurling silver fern frond of the ponga plant. Koru symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos.

2 Pongas grow wild and are found in damp bush areas in parks and reserves throughout New Zealand.

3 Kowhaiwhai traditional colors are red, white and black.
The Koru shape is the most common design element found in kowhaiwhai patterns. Kowhaiwhai traditional colors are red, white and black. Kowhaiwhai design is often found on the ceilings of Maori meeting houses. Kowaiwhai represents Maori history and represents the family tree of the tribe.

4 The Maori are the native or indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. The Maoris believe in gods which represented the sky, earth, forests, and forces of nature. The Maori people also believe that the spirits of their ancestors could be called upon to help them in times of need or war. The Maori culture is rich with songs, art, dance, and deep spiritual beliefs.

Born in Waipukurau, Hawke’s Bay. As a  teacher, I have enjoyed teaching art to children at all levels, always encouraging them to express themselves in ways which reflect their cultural identity and  love of their environment. I am currently exploring the use of water colors, pastels and charcoal in my own artwork and my inspiration is taken from the landscape and the people who live in and love this land. The  colors and patterns of nature provide a rich source of ideas for my artwork. My paintings have been purchased for private art collections in London, Paris, USA,  Australia and New Zealand.
