So what IS Twitter? It’s an information network for: news; discussions/ conversations; advocacy; promotion/marketing; fun! You can follow without being followed and vice versa Some people find it useful to contribute their own Tweets, but the real magic of Twitter lies in absorbing real-time information that matters to you. A tweet is a short message (max. 140 characters) may contain links to websites, articles, blogs and/or photos Tweet: a Twitter message Tweep: a Twitter user

What does Twitter look like? Web

What does Twitter look like? App

Anatomy of a Tweet

Who do you want to be? Your username (Twitter handle) says a lot about you – try to create a handle that is easy to remember and spell so others can connect with you (max. 15 characters) – cannot include ‘admin’ or ‘twitter’ Think about how you want the world to see you on Twitter…while remaining authentic

Picture - should represent who you want to be on Twitter…don’t be the egg! Bio (160 characters) - choose your words wisely: this is your public persona on Twitter. You may want to include your web address or other contact information, but keep in mind this information is public to everyone on the web. Your profile

Other profiles

Think Before Sharing Would you say it out loud in public?? If not, don’t say it on Twitter! Stop!

Go! To create an account: Go to and find the sign up box, or go directly to Enter your full name, address, and a password. Click Sign up for Twitter. On the next page, you can select a username - type your own or choose one they’ve suggested. Twitter will tell you if the username you want is available. Double-check your name, address, password, and username. Click Create my account. (You may be asked to complete a Captcha to prove that you're human.) Twitter will send a confirmation to the address you entered on sign up, click the link in that to confirm your address and account.

After signing up, follow a handful of accounts to create a customized stream of information on your homepage. Following means you'll get that user's Tweets on your Twitter homepage (in your ‘timeline’). You can unfollow anyone at any time. Here are some to get Filling your ‘Home’ stream

By name: Type the person's name into the search box at the top of your Twitter homepage. Your results will show a combination of people and Tweets related to your search. Refine your search by clicking on the people, photos, news, or videos tab on the left side of your search results page. By interest: From the Discover page, click on Popular accounts. Click on any interesting category or account. You can also browse by interest using the search box at the top of the Popular accounts page. Type in a person's full name, username, a topic (like ‘news’ or ‘dairy’), or a descriptive phrase (such as ‘dairy farmer’ or ‘agronomist’) and you'll see a list of account results for that search term. Use Twitter's suggestions: On the Discover page, click on Who to Follow. Finding people on Twitter

#whatsahashtag The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet and is a way to categorise messages. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword. Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end. Don't #spam #with #hashtags. Don't over-tag a single Tweet. A good rule of thumb is maximum 2/3 hashtags per Tweet. Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.

Example: In the Tweet included the hashtags #ausdairy and #ADC14. #ausdairy is the standard # for the Australian dairy industry #ADC14 was the # for the Australian Dairy Conference held in Geelong in Feb #####

Hashtags to explore #agchatoz #auspol #nswparli #farmvoices #ausbiz #solobiz #socialmedia

It is also a way of saving or bookmarking Tweets you like. What is is any update posted by clicking the Reply button on a Tweet. Any Tweet that is to you begins with your username and will show up in your mentions tab on the Notifications page. What is a mention? A mention is any Twitter update that contains anywhere in the body of the Tweet. (Yes, this means are also considered mentions.) If you include more than one person's name in your Tweet and you use format, all of those people will see the Tweet in their mentions tab.
