in the Classroom

What is Twitter? Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text- based messages of up to 140 characters - known as "tweets." Users can also post links to articles, videos, photos, blog posts, etc.

Users and Followers Users post tweets and anyone who is following that user will see the new tweet in their Twitter feed. Like Facebook, Twitter allows users to search for people to follow.

Messages and #Hashtags
Users can communicate with each other by placing an in front of the username. This is also a way to mention a particular user in a tweet. To organize tweets by topic or to mention a particular topic in a tweet, users can put a "#" in front of the word. This lets anyone who is searching for tweets on that topic find your post.

Twitter in the classroom?

Getting started... Go to www.twitter.com
Enter your name, address, and a password you would like to use Click 'sign up for Twitter'

Create your username Your username is a way for people to find you. If you want to use your Twitter page for a specific course, give it a name that is easy for students (and you) to remember. For example, "Gullette_BIOL1409"

Account settings This is where you can make changes to your account, such as changing your username and password.

Get followed Now that your Twitter page is officially set up, it's time to get some followers. You can share the link to your profile with your students - simply click on your course name and copy the URL for your page.

Class discussions Encourage your students to answer questions, have discussions, and make comments on your course's Twitter page using their laptops or smart phones. Organize the discussions by specific topic using hashtags (#). For instance, if you're teaching about the War of 1812, students could post "#warof1812" at the end of their tweets.

So much more Twijector - free online service for webcasting tweets regarding various events. TweetDeck - social media dashboard app for management of Twitter and Facebook Accounts. Allows for customisable columns, which can be set up to display specific Twitter and Facebook updates, Twitter Direct messages, or Twitter updates from a single user. tudents-collaborate-twitter/
