The Age of E x p l o r a t i o n God, Gold and Glory

I. Why go exploring? A. God 1. Europeans realized that not all of mankind was Christian, so many Europeans went on journeys to try to convert other peoples to Christianity. 2. People who go to far off places to convert others to their religion are known as missionaries.

I. Why go exploring? B. Gold (money) 1. Trading spices was a very profitable job 2. Europeans sailed from Europe to the South of Africa, then to India and China. 3. Since the journey was so long, many explorers worked to find a shorter route to Asia.

I. Why go exploring? C. Glory 1. Books written by travelers to Asia began to be widely published. 2. This attracted explorers to Asia for adventure as well as for money.

II. The Explorers A. Vasco De Gama 1. Portugese explorer who sailed around the Southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) and landed in India in 1498

II. The Explorers 2. The incredible profit that came to De Gama from this voyage inspired other explorers to follow in his tracks and to find a better, faster route

II. The Explorers B. Christopher Columbus 1. Tried to sail west instead of east in order to find Asia 2. As a result, he ended up in the Carribean in Most historians agree that Columbus was not the first to discover America (there were already a lot of people living there) but he was the first to begin European colonization

II. The Explorers Believing he had reached India, he called the group of islands in the Carribean the Indies, and the people living there Indians. Columbus spent the rest of his life looking for the passage from Europe to Asia but died without finding it

Who is Christopher Columbus? Video 1 Did the makers of this video show Columbus as a hero or a villian? How can you tell? Video 2 What is Columbus known for according to this video? How does this video contrast with the first video?

Who is Christopher Columbus? Columbus Day Why do you think America celebrates Columbus Day? What kinds of issues did the man being interviewed bring up? Do you think it is wrong to celebrate and recognize Columbus in a national holiday? Do you think we should cancel Columbus day?

II. The Explorers C. Ferdinand Magellan 1. Magellan found the passageway from Europe to Asia that Columbus had been searching for. 2. He sailed to the southern tip of South America (later named the Strait of Magellan)

II. The Explorers

II. The Explorers 5. Cortez and his conquistadors were able to easily conquer the Aztec and Inca empires because the Spanish had better weapons than these native tribes.
