1 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Funded under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance

2 Grant Information Local Governance: LWIB and Youth Council Grant Recipient/Fiscal Agent: Town of Hempstead Department of Occupational Resources (DOOR) Allocation: $358,700 Enrollees: 111 Period: July 1, 2005 through September 30, 2005 Program Dates: July 11, 2005 through August 19, 2005

3 Program Design Enrollees participate in a combination of work experience, academic and occupational learning The Paxen Basic Academic Skills Enrichment (BASE) and the Kaplan SAT Prep are the curricula utilized for the academic component All worksite and classroom training activities are coordinated in each school district by a coordinator who is usually an employee of the local educational agency These services are funded through contracts between the DOOR and each individual local educational agency

4 Program Design (continued) Throughout the program, work experience is conducted in the functional context of basic skills and leadership development lessons taught in the classroom Participants are paid an hourly wage of $6.00 per hour Each pay period includes a maximum of 48 hours of Work Experience and a minimum of 12 hours of Academic and Occupational Learning, for a combined total of 60 hours per pay period The network of school district coordinators is required to report progress and outcomes to DOOR on a regular basis

5 Benefits of SYEP Provides young people with basic education, occupational skills and leadership qualities necessary to cultivate the workers of tomorrow and help local business to prosper Provides services to at risk youth to prevent them from becoming dropouts, offenders or substance abusers and to remove their other barriers to employment, in order to create a better quality of life and to transform potential taxpayers costs into revenue Empowers youth to earn incomes and advance in careers

6 HempsteadWorks Leaders of Tomorrow (HWLOTS) Scholarship Initiative - Objective The objective of HempsteadWorks Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship (HWLOTS) initiative is to create a working partnership with the secondary schools, students, higher education, HempsteadWorks and Winthrop University Hospital The partners would work together to foster an interest among young people in health care careers, instill the leadership qualities in them that are required to succeed in health care occupations and establish a pipeline of future workers

8 HWLOTS - Elements Work Experience: 18 hours per week performing clerical duties at United Cerebral Palsy, Inc. of Nassau County Academic and Occupational Learning: 6 hours per week of the Kaplan SAT Prep delivered by instructors from United Cerebral Palsy, Inc. Leadership Training: 6 hours of a curriculum designed by Hofstra University and delivered by management staff of Winthrop University Hospital, including the Vice President of Human Resources Transportation: Bus transportation provided to and from the Leadership Training at the hospital provided by DOOR
