Lab Safety How can YOU maintain lab safety? STOP to think use common sense consider the consequences ASK the teacher if in doubt

Proper Attire - Discuss avoid floppy/dangly items – WHY? get tangled up in equipment & cause accidents tie hair back – no loose/long hair – WHY? gets caught on things or can catch fire easily [which smells really bad!] closed-toed shoes – WHY? long pants / no shorts – WHY?

Know Your Equipment

Goggles Many states REQUIRE that students wear protective goggles or glasses in the lab. WHY? When would you wear which type of goggle?

Know Your Equipment Fire Blanket pull the blanket out of the wall holder wrap it around the victim to smother the fire.

Know Your Equipment Fire Extinguisher carbon dioxide = general purpose dry chemical [powder] electrical or other difficult fires don’t use them on people…why?

Know Your Equipment Fire Extinguisher – the Tag tells what type you have [color can also do this] indicates the last service/test date

Know Your Equipment Fire Extinguisher – Operation locate the “key” [round] twist the key to break the nylon cord [can be hard to just pull] pull the key off point the nozzle in the direction of the fire squeeze the handle to begin spray carbon dioxide or powder helps cool the fire, restrict oxygen to the fire fire goes out

Know Your Equipment Eyewash Fountain if you get something from the lab in your eye— GET IT OUT IMMEDIATELY! run some water through the eyewash fountain before you use it. retract your eyelid (hold it open); don’t squint—this restricts water access. run fresh water over your eye for several minutes. (20 minutes for acids or bases) go to the school nurse immediately afterward.

Know Your Equipment First Aid Kit located in Mr. Jackson’s room for serious injuries the nurse or 911 will be called. Discuss – what’s in a first aid kit?

Know Your Equipment Fume Hood used for some reactions that give off vapors that you can smell and those you cannot draft of the hood sweeps away vapors so that the lab itself maintains reasonable air quality.

Know Your Equipment Safety Shower used in emergency ONLY ex: you are [or a lab mate is] ON FIRE pull the handle—a deluge of water will result. flames will be rapidly extinguished NOT used for all fires should also be used in the event of a massive dangerous chemical spill on yourself or a lab mate this will seldom be necessary.

Other Broken Glass: announce something’s been broken no one should move around until cleaned clean immediately not with your hands place the broken glass in a SHARPS container thick walled carton, that will be sealed and discarded as such. if such a container is not available, the trash can is an acceptable substitute.

Other Material Data Safety Sheets [MSDS] attached to chemicals when purchased typically still attached to most chemicals here all potentially harmful chemicals in the lab must have an MSDS on file may find other/more detailed MSDS sheets in a chemical stock room if needed

Yellow often means reactive with water!!! HONORS ONLY

NFPA Label – Discuss Summarize the __ of/on the NFPA label. shape location of the colors meaning of the colors HONORS ONLY

Student Use of the Lab NO unauthorized or unmonitored labs NO food or drink DO NOT eat or drink from lab equipment you never know what someone did before you!

Student Use of the Lab DO NOT smell a flask/beaker/etc directly …waft it if absolutely necessary not near your face BE CAREFUL!!! Do not attempt to touch something to see if it’s hot. Do not hand a hot item to someone else. heat tubes/beakers/etc pointed AWAY from others in the room

Student Use of the Lab A lways A dd A cid to water, NOT the other way around. adding water to acid can cause the acid to splash. the heat generated by the reaction will be lessened

Student Use of the Lab read & complete [re-write] the procedure [ALL of it] BEFORE lab day make sure your materials are set up correctly and completely, even if they were there before you came. if using matches, light one BEFORE you turn on the gas – the wet the match and put it in a container, not the sink

Student Use of the Lab NO HORSEPLAY!! exit the lab in a well-ordered fashion
