Gender and Sexuality Quiz Chapter 13 Gender and Sexuality Quiz

Clothes with Gender Links How do your perceptions change with my earrings? How do some objects come to have such powerful gender linked meanings?

Characteristics of Gender List 5 traits of your personality: outgoing, intelligent, caring, stoic, etc 5 interests: skiing, knitting, singing, rock climbing, under water basket weaving, etc 5 behaviors you usually engage in: smoking, dieting, talking while the teacher is lecturing, drinking coffee, biting your nails, etc

Discussion Picture yourself doing those things as a member of the opposite gender If you had been born the opposite gender, in what ways would your identity be similar or different?

Physical Sex XX=female and XY=male chromosomes Everyone starts out the same Is this clear cut? No, someone may develop “intersexual” by having ambiguous genitalia Resulting from wrong levels of hormones Especially testosterone Not only do males and females develop the same in the beginning…

Gender Development Includes gender role socialization What is “normal” or “typical” for a little boy or little girl The lack of success with assigning gender implies that there is a biological base to gender identity as well Biological biasing effect: idea that prenatal hormones affect body, nervous system and behaviors. Evident in animals

More Gender Stereotypes: when we assume something about the other gender Very culturally specific: heavy work is not always the males responsibility: page 432 Begins early: Boys’ instrumental (goal driven) behavior is reinforced Girls’ expressive (emotion oriented) behavior is reinforced

What does this mean to you? Androgyny Literally means man-woman Sandra Bem’s BSRI ‘Masculine’ traits means assertive and independent: usually correlates with higher self esteem and success ‘Feminine’ traits means nurturing and interpersonally oriented: correlates with better personal relationships, including marriage What does this mean to you?

BSRI A measure of androgyny and gender roles The Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) provides  independent assessments of masculinity and femininity in terms of the respondent’s self-reported possession of socially desirable, stereotypically masculine and feminine personality characteristics. This can also be seen as a measurement of the extent to which respondents spontaneously sort self-relevant information into distinct masculine and feminine categories. The self administering sixty-item questionnaire measures masculinity, femininity, androgyny, and undifferentiated, using the Masculinity and Femininity scales.

Sexual Relations Much more than erogenous zones Sexual scripts: culturally specific guidelines to a sexual encounter Sex drive: motivation to engage in sex Drive and arousal found to be the same in Men and Women Drugs affect arousal History of acceptance of Sex in society

Researching around arousal and: Pornography How is this measured? The sensing and measurement of sexual arousal in human beings is measured by machines which detect the swelling and color changes of parts of the male and female human body due to engorgement with blood in response to sexual arousal. This includes the change in color and swelling of the walls of the vagina, swelling of the breasts, and expansion due to blood flow of the penis. Useful in diagnosing sexual dysfunctional problems, for assessing arousal patterns to various stimuli and for behavior modification. The most common of these devices is called a penile plethysmograph (PPG; also known as erectometer) Arousal for males and females: physical the same, emotional different Arousal higher watching male on male videos for self-identified homophobic men Used with sex offenders also Is this effective? Currently, pedophilia is thought of as an orientation, just as being gay or straight. Can you change someone’s orientation?

The bad: sex crimes Deviant Sexual Behavior: is defined as “anything other than face to face sexual intercourse between a married heterosexual couple” Rape: forced sexual intercourse 1 in 7 women raped in her lifetime Paraphilias are compulsive or destructive deviations in sexual preferences; can cause guilt, anxiety or discomfort More info on child molesters: Usually straight, married, religious and knows the child. Any of these have lasting emotional effects on the victim.

Sexual Orientation Degree you are attracted to members of your own sex, the opposite sex or both. Why does someone ‘become’ homosexual? Why is someone heterosexual? New evidence for genetics. Less often that someone becomes homosexual, more likely it is always there.

Where do you rate? Sexuality: an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them, includes a persons state of being and lifestyle in establishing and maintaining relationships with other people Examine the ways you like to spend your social time and with whom. Write down 10 things you do for fun [when and if you had time]. What do you do for fun? Who do you do it with?

Put yourself on this continuum Same Sex____________________Opposite Sex Homosexual Heterosexual Preferring to spend more time with and deriving more pleasure from activities with members of one’s own sex Preferring to spend more time with and deriving more pleasure from activities with members of the opposite sex

Essay Evaluate the essay you have on a 1-10 scale: How nice is this person? How much do you like them? How much would you want to be their partner in class? Roommate? How well is the essay written?

Puberty Many cultures have special rites of passage into puberty. A few have circumcision rites, for both males and females. What are the rites of passage for puberty in your culture? What do you think about them?

Birds and Bees Where did you gain your knowledge of sex? How did you develop your attitude towards sexuality? Did your parents discuss these things with you? What are you going to discuss with your [future] children?
