2 Sex vs. Gender Sex – biological distinction between males and females
Gender – Expectations for behavior of males and females

3 Sex Primary sex characteristics – organs used for reproduction, namely the genitals. Secondary sex characteristics – bodily differences, apart from the genitals, that distinguish biologically mature females and males.

4 Sex Hermaphrodite – a human being with some combination of female and male genitalia. Transsexuals – people who feel they are one sex even though biologically they are the other

5 Sexual Orientation A person’s preference in terms of sexual partners.
Heterosexuality – sexual attraction to someone of the opposite sex. Homosexuality – sexual attraction to someone of the same sex Bisexual – sexual attraction to people of both sexes Asexuality – no sexual attraction to either sex

6 Sexual Orientation Most estimates for homosexuality are between 2-10% of population Depends on how one operationalizes the term Homophobia – dread of close personal interaction with people thought to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

7 Sexual Issues Pornography – sexually explicit material that causes sexual arousal. Prostitution – selling of sexual services. Rape – involves power
