BELLRINGER Brainstorm a list of goals that teens commonly have. Discussion – Why do you think these goals can be helpful in their lives?

Why Set Goals? Goal setting is a powerful tool, one that you can use to shape your future. Goals help you focus so you can accomplish what you want in life. They can give you a sense of purpose and help you make decisions. They can also help you measure your progress. It’s important to set realistic goals. If you want to improve in math, getting a better grade on the next quiz is realistic. Getting all A’s for the whole year might be a lot harder.

Long-Term Goals A long-term goal is a goal that you intend to reach over a long period of time. If the goal that you want to set will take months or years, it is a long-term goal. A short-term goal is a goal that you can set for a short period of time. Example – Long-term goal of running 2 miles without stopping would be broken down into short-term goals. 1. Run ¼ mile for one week, then add a ¼ mile for each additional week until the 2 mile goal is met.

Strategies For Attaining a Goal Once you decide on a goal, you have to think of a plan to help you meet your goal. Step 1 – Set a realistic goal and write it down. Step 2 – List the steps that you need to take to reach that goal. Step 3 – Find others that can help and support you. Step 4 – Set checkpoints to evaluate your progress. Step 5 – Reward yourself after reaching the goal.

Example Step 1 – My goal is to earn $400 for a mountain bike. Step 2 – 1. Start delivering newspapers 2. Make and deliver flyers to advertise 3. Deliver papers 4. Save all money Step 3 – My brother and sister can help me. Step 4 – Checkpoints – By December earn $125, By March earn $125, and By June earn $150 Step 5 – My new bike is my reward!

S.M.A.R.T. Goals Specific – Make specific statements with both short and long term goals. Ex. I want to be healthy is a general statement. Instead say that you want to lose 10 pounds or better achieve less than 20% body fat. Measureable – How will you know that you’ve reached your goal? Ex. I will know if I’ve lost fat by measuring my fat%. Action-oriented – What are the steps that you will take to achieve the goal. Ex. I’m going to start exercising 30 minutes when I get home everyday. Relevant/Realistic– Is the goal realistic and relevant to what I want to do? Why or why not? Timeframe – When will you accomplish your goal? I will measure my progress weakly and give myself a reward if I make progress toward my goal.

Brochure Activity You will create a brochure with 4 goals – one goal for each side of the health triangle, plus one character trait goal. 1. Put your title and name on the front side. 2. Put one goal for each of the 4 remaining sides with the heading at the top/side/or bottom. On each side, you will list the steps you need to take to reach the goals. Make sure they are SMART goals. 3. On the last side, you can list people that will help you reach your goals, and your reward!
