Abstract We are looking to make a bike with a shelf for street vendors in New York City. We want to make it affordable for low-income residents, weather resistant, and weight proportional for someone on a bike. We also want to make it so that it can hold all of the products being sold as well as present the products to sell more efficiently. First, we needed develop a basis for what features we desired for our shelf. We surveyed a various amount of people in order to get a better idea of what people want. We then developed a hierarchy of customer needs. We also researched various things on New York City, such as poverty, and we also talked to people from the area in order to get an idea of what vendors sell. Other things we researched were materials that we could use to make our product durable and strong but lightweight. We generated concepts and came up with this design. Conclusion W finally came up with our design through our customer needs assessment and we found that using High Density Polyethylene, we could make our product more affordable while still being durable. We found that Polyethylene was also recyclable making this product more sustainable. Overall, the product is functional and affordable to lower income people in New York City. 1. Durability 1.1 Weather Resistant 1.2 Long lasting 2. Size C.1 Weight C.2 Load weight/size C.3 Capacity 3. Construction C.4 Materials C.5 Cost 4. Eco-friendliness 4.1 Environmentally friendly Problem Statement Our initial problem was to design a shelf that attaches to a bike and helps street vendors transport their products to major selling areas. The shelf is to also serve a display for the products. From our customer needs assessment, we determined what features we want our bike shelf to have. Our most prominent desired features were durability and weather resistance. The next major factors were the weight, size, and capacity. The last few were the materials, cost and eco-friendliness. From these, we determined that we want a long-lasting, durable product that will transport a sufficient amount of goods, and be relatively low in cost.
