TRAVEL ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN Team 7: Rachel Dahlberg Tyler Gardner Peter Jackson John Nisbet

Outline OBJECTIVE: To redesign an Electric toothbrush (travel version) SEQUENCE OF DESIGN ACTIVITIES: Introduction (PETER) Project management (JOHN) Customer needs (RACHEL) External search (TYLER) Redesign concepts (JOHN) Final design( RACHEL & TYLER) Final remarks (PETER)

Project Management JohnPeterTylerRachel  Concept Design  Dissection & Analysis  Patent Research  Concept Design  Dissection & Analysis  Abstract (Background Concepts)  Concept Design  Dissection & Analysis  Benchmarking  Literature Review  Concept Design  Dissection & Analysis  Customer Needs  Literature Review  Final Product CAD Drawing

Customer Needs 1. Aesthetics (0.13) 1.1 Not vibrant, but not dull (0.065) 1.2 Simple colors (0.065) 2. Portable/Comfortable (0.24) 2.1 Lightweight/Compact (0.069) 2.2 No bulky base (0.14) 2.3 Possibly folding (0.034) 3. Efficient Brush (0.15) 3.1 Pulsing bristles vs. rotational vs. linear (0.050) 3.2 Bristle toughness ideal (0.022) 3.3 Interchangeable heads (0.020) 3.4 Easy to operate (0.036) 3.5 Flexible bristles (0.022) 4. Extras (0.10) 4.1 Flossing attachment (0.017) 4.2 Tongue scrubber (0.023) 4.3 Travel Case (0.040) 4.4 Automatic shut off/notification of 2 minutes (0.010) 4.5 Attachable toothpaste (0.010) 5. Power (0.21) 5.1 Powerful (0.057) 5.2 Runs on batteries (0.057) 5.3 Long battery life (0.057) 5.4 Multiple speed settings (0.016) 5.5 Battery life notification (0.023) 6. Cost Efficient (0.18) The team has decided that the portability and powering of the toothbrush are most important and thus will be primarily focused on. The team also decided that while some power features and extras are important, others would be too complex for a simple electric toothbrush.

Final Design, cont. Brush Head- linear movement bottom brush, rotational movement top brush, fixed linearly Scotch yoke- linear motion controls tongue scraper Cylindrical lithium ion battery- speed settings and power button. Not rechargeable in body, life expectancy is 6 months

Final Remarks Conclusion As engineers, we strive to make life better by constant innovation. Extent of Success We have collectively generated ideas, and managed to put them in the final develeopment of the concepts that led to the final design. Our electric toothbrush design has become a multifunctional equipment with the addiction of the unique features such as tongue scrapper, lithium ion battery, speed settings, etc.
