Why was APEC created? To build a dynamic and harmonious Asia-Pacific community by championing free and open trade and investment, promoting and accelerating regional economic integration, encouraging economic and technical cooperation, enhancing human security, and facilitating a favorable and sustainable business environment

When was APEC formed? The idea of APEC was firstly publicly broached by former Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Bob Hawke, during a speech in Seoul, Korea in January 1989. Later that year, 12 Asia-Pacific economies met in Canberra, Australia to establish APEC. The founding members were: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. China, Hong Kong, China and Chinese Taipei joined in 1991. Mexico and Papua New Guinea followed in 1993. Chile acceded in 1994. And in 1998, Peru, Russia and Viet Nam joined, taking the full membership to 21. Between 1989 and 1992, APEC met as an informal senior official and Ministerial level dialogue. In 1993, former United States President, Mr Bill Clinton, established the practice of an annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

APEC’s Role Today Continue to support sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region Known as APEC's 'Three Pillars', APEC focuses on three key areas: Trade and Investment Liberalization Business Facilitation Economic and Technical Cooperation Raise awareness of this organization to gain support and members

APEC’s International Issues In 2010-2011, APEC approved funding for 235 projects, focusing on trade-related issues Recent APEC projects include: Regional economic integration: energy management standardization, intellectual property rights, traditional knowledge protection, self-certification of origin Green growth:  low-carbon model town , green finance , phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, smart grids Structural reform:  regulatory impact analysis, principals of corporate governance, competition law and policy Capacity building for APEC’s developing members: ship and port security, trade of second generation biofuels, best practices for green ICT, infectious disease prevention

APEC & Canada Canada was one of the 12 founding members, specifically being one of the three of the creating founding members of APEC with Australia and Brunei Darussalam on November 6-7, 1989 Canada’s role in APEC: various Government of Canada departments are active in over 30 APEC working groups and committees Canada chaired the APEC Health Working Group, the Fisheries Working Group and the Agricultural Technical Cooperation Working Group. Also, Canada is the Lead Shepherd for the APEC Transportation Working Group

APEC & Canada cont. APEC is important to Canada because: the APEC region encompasses countries critical to Canada's future economic prosperity and security interests It remains the only trans-Pacific regional organization that hosts a leaders-level meeting at which Canada is present APEC allows Canada to further engage in bilateral and multilateral discussions and negotiations in one of the world's largest economic zones, where many of our key trade partners are also members. Trade in goods and services between APEC economies have more than tripled, in dollar terms, since the forum's inception
