Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre The APEC Energy Database Joint SPC-APEC Regional Workshop on Energy Statistics and Modeling for the SDG7 and the COP21 INDC Energy Targets 14-18 March 2016 Nuku’alofa, Kingdom of Tonga Edito Barcelona Energy Statistics and Training Office Asia-Pacific Energy Research Centre

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre History of the APEC Energy Database Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was established in 1989 in Australia by 12 founding members (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States); the membership gradually increased to 21 economies by 1998 The APEC EWG (Energy Working Group) was organized in 1990 to facilitate energy-related-trade and investment and maximize the energy sector’s contribution to the region’s economic and social well-being, while mitigating the environmental effects of energy supply and use The Expert Group on Energy Data and Analysis (EGEDA) was established by the APEC EWG in 1991 and was given the responsibility for managing and reviewing the operation of the APEC Energy Database EGEDA has established an energy data collection network and has published the “APEC Energy Statistics” annually since 1993 2

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre EGEDA Coordinating Agency Energy Data Exchange 6 Now we are exchanging files on excel via e-mail… Australia Brunei Canada Chile China Hong Kong, China Indonesia Japan Korea Malaysia Mexico New Zealand Papua New Guinea Peru Philippines Russia Singapore Chinese Taipei Thailand United States Viet Nam

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre Data Submission 7 Shared Questionnaire Database We hope to switch to online submission in the near future… Australia Brunei Canada Chile China Hong Kong, China Indonesia Japan Korea Malaysia Mexico New Zealand Papua New Guinea Peru Philippines Russia Singapore Chinese Taipei Thailand United States Viet Nam EGEDA Coordinating Agency Data Upload: By Direct Input By Uploading Files Self Validation: Consistency Time-series check On-line Database Energy Balance

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre Pros / Cons of Online Data Submission 8 - Enable cross-checking of questionnaires for better data consistency - Sharing updating record and comments - Downloading Questionnaires at any time - Enable Time series data checking - Re designing the questionnaire formats - Re designing data compiling system in each economy - Need to procure new data server / system - Need to train economy’s statisticians on the new system

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre Uses of APEC Data 9 Energy Demand Forecasting APERC has prepared 5 energy outlooks with the 6 th edition to be released as APERC celebrates its 20 th year anniversary

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre Uses of APEC Data 10 Publication of APEC Energy Overview A compact reference that shows the current energy situation in each of the 21 member economies along with information on energy policies and notable energy developments

Energy Statistics & Training Office Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre Uses of APEC Data 11 Tracking the APEC energy intensity reduction and doubling renewable energy goal Energy Intensity Goal: 45% reduction by 2035 compared to 2005 level Renewable Doubling Goal: by 2030 compared to 2010 levels
