KIWIS New Zealanders are affectionately known as ‘Kiwis’, named after their iconic national bird – not the fruit! Kiwis make great hosts. Visitors to the country often comment on how friendly and hospitable New Zealanders are. New Zealand is becoming increasingly multi cultural with a mix of nationalities including European (80%), Maori (15%), Pacific Islander and Asian.

CITIES Auckland New Zealand’s largest urban area has all the elements you require for a great city experience; outstanding food, wine and shopping. Only 45 minutes out of the city, visitors can be hiking through lush rainforests, surfing on black sand beaches or sailing. Christchurch Take a tram ride through the heart of the city or punt down the Avon river. The city offers easy access to the sea and the Alps, and has a big backyard filled with hot pools, vineyards and ski fields. Wellington “Best little capital in the world”. The city has a thriving performing arts and culture scene, wildlife on your doorstep, great shopping and cafes.

Maori CULTURE Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand and make up 14% of the population Most Maori live in cities while retaining affiliations with their iwi (tribal) and hapu (sub tribal) areas which are often expressed through genealogy (whakapapa) The marae (traditional community centre) is the focus of Maori cultural life Maori culture is rich in traditional and contemporary arts. Carving, weaving, kapa haka (group performance) are practised throughout the country

Taste a Pavlova (our famous meringue dessert) Buy a ‘buzzy bee’ – a wooden toy that infants play with Drink some ‘L&P’ – a unique New Zealand soft drink Watch an All Black’s game (New Zealand’s national rugby team) at a pub with the locals KIWIANA Visitors wanting an authentic New Zealand experience should immerse themselves in kiwiana! Kiwiana is the weird and wonderful quirky things from years gone by, that contribute to our sense of nationhood – our kiwi identity.

ECO EXPERIENCES Appreciate the native fauna and flora in one of the 14 National Parks throughout the country, swim with the dolphins, visit an offshore island bird sanctuary or an urban wildlife reserve. There are plenty of eco experiences for you in New Zealand. “New Zealand is spearheading the eco travel revolution…winning accolades with its ethos towards responsible travel ….when you are gawping at the spine-tingling vistas its good to know they’ll be there for future generations” Lonely Planet, November 2009.

ADVENTURE Excitement isn’t hard to find in New Zealand! The country is one huge playground – from the top to the bottom, visitors can enjoy a raft of activities from mild – such as sea kayaking, four wheel driving and scenic flights, to wild – sky diving, bungy jumping and white water rafting.

CRUISE Cruising is an increasingly popular way for visitors to experience New Zealand. Around 10 ports receive ships over the cruising season of October to April. New Zealand’s ports are a few hours sailing from each other, making it easy to reach a new destination overnight. Cruise ships visiting New Zealand often include Australia, Antarctica and the South Pacific Islands as part of their itineraries.

Wine & cuisine New Zealand is known for its great food and is enjoying a growing reputation for producing quality wines especially Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand restaurants often feature a unique cuisine termed “Pacific Rim” which draws on New Zealand’s fresh produce and seafood along with the flavours and cooking methods of countries that share the Pacific Ocean. Have a delicious platter at a vineyard, explore the farmer’s markets, sample regional and seasonal delicacies such as crayfish, Bluff oysters or whitebait patties.

SHOPPING Merino wool and possum fur products as well as New Zealand wine and gourmet treats are a great buy. For traditional souvenirs looks for examples of Maori carvings in wood, bone or pounamu (greenstone or jade). You can find jewellery and ornaments made from iridescent paua shell (abalone) treasured by Maori for centuries. When shopping for New Zealand goods look for the kiwi-in- the-triangle on the label – the symbol represents products that are locally made and manufactured.

Visa requirements To visit New Zealand you must have a valid passport. For visa requirements check with your local New Zealand embassy or go to

i-SITEs Found throughout the country, visitors can drop into an i-SITE visitor information centre, for local secrets on what to see and do in the area.
