Information The Antarctic continent wasn't even actually seen until No man set foot in Antarctica until The first human landing there is claimed by Henryk Bull, with a party from a whaling ship. They landed at Cape Adare. It was 1935 before the first woman set foot there. Her name was Catherine Mikkelson, and she was the wife of a Norwegian whaling captain. The South Pole was first reached by a Norwegian named Roald Amundsen in 1911, and shortly after by British explorer Robert Scott.

Special events The Earth's southernmost point, Antarctica is the driest and coldest of the seven continents. For a place that's 98 per cent covered in one-mile-deep ice, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to visit at all. But there's an eerie, stark beauty about Antarctica that is incomparable to anywhere else on the planet. Sprinkle in some penguin sightings and you've got one of the most unique settings in the world. While Antarctica has no permanent residents, there are often up to 5,000 researchers working there at a time. We recommend visiting by Cruise via Ushuaia, Argentina.

Things to do pt 2 Go on tours Snowboarding Snowmobiling Visit things like the animals
