MOUNT PLEASANT PRIMARY SCHOOL Y3 Summer 1, 2015 MATHS In This term in Maths, Year 3 will be continuing to work on mental and written methods for adding and subtracting numbers with up to 3 digits, and applying these skills to solve problems. They will learn to read, write, order and round two- and three-digit numbers, and use multiplication and division to solve problems. In work on shape children will learn to identify horizontal, vertical and curved lines, and to identify different angles. They will also learn to measure using millilitres and litres. Websites you could visit to support your child: SCIENCE In Science this term the children will be learning about rocks and soils. Children will find out how different types of rocks are formed, what their properties are and how they can be used. They will learn about volcanoes and the structure of the Earth beneath our feet, and how fossils are formed. Websites that support this topic: ls/read/1/ ENGLISH In English this term Year 3 will be reading the book Gorilla, by Anthony Browne. This book will be used as a stimulus to extend children’s knowledge of a range of writing, including diary entries, story writing, biography and autobiography. We will also be using our geography work on mountains and rivers as a stimulus for writing poetry. At home you could support your child by visiting educational websites that give examples of how to write recounts, and how to plan stories. The children will also be consolidating grammar to support writing including speech punctuation. Supporting Websites: p=3 Geography The Geography topic this term is ‘Mountains and Rivers’. Children will be learning all about how rivers and mountains form and how they can identify smaller streams, lakes, tributaries and hills. They will also b e locating them on atlases by checking glossaries and content pages. In addition to this children will be looking at the longest rivers and highest mountains and describing them using technical vocabulary. Websites below can be used to support children at home. junior.kent.sch.uk/homework/mountains.htm P.O.R Book Summer 1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION In P.E. throughout this term children will be doing athletics; improving their running, jumping and balancing techniques. They will also be learning rounders; working on throwing and bowling skills, batting technique and teamwork. Please ensure you provide children with the correct P.E. Kit which includes a white polo/T-Shirt, shorts, tracksuit bottoms and suitable pumps. The outdoor P.E. Kit is black waterproof tracksuit bottoms, full sleeved top or sports hooded top. Art In Art this term children will be finding out about the landscape paintings of David Hockney. They will make a pencil sketch of a landscape on-location, and learn about mixing colours as they paint a larger version of their picture. MUSIC All children in Year 3 will be learning to play violins. This will involve learning to hold and try different techniques to support understanding in listening attentively to patterns and stories in music. In addition to this children will learn to sing from memory, begin to tell stories by listening to music and explore feelings through different percussions and videos planned. Computing In computing Year 3 will learn how to use software to present text – inputting and formatting text, inserting images and arranging them on the page. They will also learn how software can help with proof-reading, editing and improving their writing. Homework Children will continue to receive English and spelling homework in their homework books, and maths homework in their separate maths workbook. Remember that both books are due in on Wednesday at the latest. If children are struggling with the homework, they should bring it to school on Monday and go to the lunchtime homework club where a teacher will help them. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION In R.E. children will be looking at what it means to be a Sikh. They will look at Sikh beliefs, symbols and holy people, and festivals celebrated by Sikh people. MFL Year 3 will be studying French as their Modern Foreign Language (MFL). Children will be introduced to basic vocabulary and opportunities will be provided to reinforce this to consolidate understanding.
