Birthday Traditions

The Greeks used to take cakes to the temple of the goddess of the moon. They made the cakes round just like the full moon. They added candles to make it glow like the moon. Germans were the first to celebrate children’s birthdays. They were called Kinderfeste. Kinder means child and feste means party. They also were great candle makers. They made small and large candles. The large candle would be marked with 12 lines and be burned every year. Some people believe that the smoke from the candles would take their wishes up heaven. Today we believe if you blow all the candles out in one breath it will bring you good luck!

China I think China is an interesting country. China is on the continent of Asia. China`s favorite sport is soccer their favorite food is rice. They eat it at every meal. Their favorite holiday is The Spring Festival. China has 1 billion people in it. On a child`s birthday the child respects his/her parents and gets money and noodles for lunch.

Mexico We learned a lot about Mexico. It is located on North America. They call soccer, football. They also have other sports the most popular is bullfighting. They eat corn, rice, beans, and tacos. They are good. Mexicans can speak two languages English and Spanish. Children have Piñatas. A Piñatas is an animal or stars shape made out of paper. The piñatas is hung by a rope and blindfolded children take turns hitting the piñatas with a stick. When they break the piñatas all the goodies come out. This tradition is over 300 years old..

India I learned a lot of interesting facts about India. It is very hot and rainy. India has lots of earthquakes, floods, and droughts. They get around in mini buses, taxis, and motor scooter. They speak Hindi and English. The like to play soccer and cricket. There are 40 to 50 students in a class. Chess was invented in India. On a child’s birthday they bring chocolate to school for everyone in their class, with the help of a trusted friend. India is an interesting country.

England This is how England celebrates its birthdays. They use fortune telling cakes. If you find a toy poisons spider you will not live very long.If you get a coin you will get rich. That is a pretty cool way to celebrate your birthday.

Japan I’ve learned a lot about Japan. This is what I’ve learned. People in Japan love rice.Their favorite sport is baseball. Their favorite holiday is new years! The kids in Japan have to study very hard. They don’t have as much free time either. Most families own a car but they do use buses, trains and subways to get around. On Japan birthdays you have to wear totally new clothes. I enjoyed learning about Japan.
